Noble Fleet Officers

How dangerous is it for a regime to put the reins of its primary power base in the hands of potential rivals? When the nobility control the military from the inside and out, the emperor only survives by the grace of his vassals.

IMTU, the recently ascended emperor has consolidated his power by removing the nobility from the military chain of command; the military answers to him alone. The nobles rely on his good grace to keep their heads.

The response is for the nobles to choke their duties in response.

IIRC the main purpose of nobles is to ensure that imperial taxation flows up the line correctly. If the nobles have economic control, then the military have no budget.

From a US-centric point of view, the president can demand that she has absolute control of the military, but that doesn't matter much if the congress chokes all funding.

If it helps funding, given minor nobles access and command of forces allows a limited amount of adhoc oversight for the spending that the nobles themselves arrange.

IMTU many noble Navy officers earned their status through Naval service. Afterall in RL Admiral Nelson wasn't a viscount when he was joined the Navy, he was just a reverend's son.

The Navy can act as a track to high status for non-noble but still well off Imperial citizens and if they earn high status and wealth through loyal Imperial service... Well the Emperor giveth and the Emperor taketh away.

“…if he acheives a dukedom after being knighted, then the knighthood is superseded by the dukedom…”

I could have sworn that it would have been something like Nelson’s assuming a British type system. Hey is made up anyway so I guess we get to do anything we want. ;) I would imagine that the lesser nobles would want to tack anything they could on to look more important.

Vice Admiral of the White The Right Honourable Horatio, Viscount Nelson, Knight of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath.

Idea:
Military title, First and or middle names, Imperial title, House or surname, Imperial knighthood, local title

Grand Poohbah Kurega, Duke of Asteroid 1345-H, House of Gikur, (OIS) Order of the Imperial Ear Swab, Keeper of the Keys of Tool Shed Seven

[edit] All tremble and bow before my mighty ear swab!

Bwhahahahahah!

Is that a subsector or a sector sized asteroid your Grace?

"Keeper of the Keys of Tool Shed Seven" could be an important ceremonial title, trust me there are some pretty weird sounding ceremonial offices which previously had a practical role in the Royal Household.

"The Clerk of the Closet"

"Grand Carver of England" - No it's not a catering position.

USS OAK HILL (LSD-51) - One non-nuke gator-freightin' skimmer.

And you didn't miss much; pre-com is the worst possible duty. I'd rather winter over on the ice sheet at McMurdo in my skivies than go thru that hell again.
