elsewhere we read:

There are quite a surprising subset board members who claim to play Traveller but use neither a Traveller Ruleset nor the Official Traveller Universe.

what say you? how much of your game is official rulesets and materials, and how much is your own rulesets and materials?

I really think your choice of poll answers is only asking half the question, and even then quite poorly.

Far better would have been a structure like:

An official ruleset mostly as written in the OTU or GTU
An official ruleset mostly as written not in the OTU nor GTU
A houseruled and/or hybridized official ruleset in the OTU/GTU
A Houseruled and/or hybridized official ruleset not in the OTU
A Non-Traveller ruleset in the OTU/GTU
A Non-Traveller ruleset not in the OTU/GTU
Don't play Traveller - Reader
Don't play nor read Traveller

Yeah I'm with Aramis on this one.

I'm playing Traveller every other Tuesday, except we don't use any conventional version of the rules, or background as yet.

Space is big though, as Hawkwind were fond of singing, so it could happen.

I did figure out out how many dTons our cruiser was the other night, just to give it some context.

12,857 btw, Arbiter-class, the 'Baleful Gaze'...

deliberately so. one may quibble endlessly about this category or that implication, but the poll is intended to generate a "just chop it in half" ballpark answer. more nuanced examinations and discussions can be pursued later, if indicated.

Fair enough. Thus my answer was "100%", even though I'm sure I'm not 100% compliant.

Ruleset - CT+, the plus being cherry pickings from other rules editions (MT special duty roll during character generation, T4 combat and psionics, MGT boon/bane mechanic) plus a few house rules tagged on (target numbers for skill rolls either 8+ or 12+).

Setting - most common a proto-Traveller Spinward Marches, second a Long Night based 'planet of the week', third MT Hard Times and finally a TNE campaign.

Away from the OTU based stuff above I have a Culture based campaign that I run when I can think of a suitable scenario.

I have also used CT rules as written to run Star Wars, Star Trek and Blake's Seven based settings.

I have run every version of the game rules as written bar Hero edition; I have used Aftermath, Twilight 2000 1e, EABA, White Wolf's Storyteller system and BRP for Spinward Marches (golden age) scenarios and adventures.

results: so, a strong reliance on published (rulesets and materials), with almost universal tailoring to suit personal applications of those (rulesets and materials).

This is a weird poll, in that Mostly I use Traveller, If one editions rules are lacking I go looking in other editions. Before I write a new set of rules.

Right now I am Using MgT's character creation and Base Task system fused with CT and house rules with a flavor AHL's combat system as modified by Striker and MT. With that CT is the baseline game framework it all rests on.

Thought of another flaw with this poll as done... how do folks like Cryton, who doesn't so much houserule, but runs a mashup of multiple editions - CGen by X, Combat by Y, Trade by Z, System gen by W...

That's still all "official rules"...

I really like the underlying idea of Traveller. That is, it follows science / physics etc., as much as possible. The limiting of "PFM" appeals to me.

I see the rules as a great start. That doesn't mean they're perfect or inviolate. Traveller isn't a game where one player "wins" and the others "lose." Rules lawyers needn't apply.

If I find something works better than the written rules, that's what I'm going with. The game is be enjoyed by the participants, not given trophies for "winning."

That said, I also am against rules being made up on the fly. Consistency is important too. So, I let the players know them before hand, or at least before they are applied.

I tossed in the "something else" category just as a matter of principle, but someone has selected it! would that voter care to explain?

i chose 75/25 as we use the mongoose 2E rules for the game part, but all the setting materials is from a combination of places. we playing in the gateway domain T20 era (994), but i'm currently using Night City from Cyberpunk 2020 as a city setting on Daggar's Edge in the Ley sector.

I also like running adventures from anywhere that has good ones. right now a "systemless" adventure (The Babylon Compulsion) from mike brown on DTRPG, but was originally set in Las Vegas.

OTU-ish!
