Origin of 76 X?

What is the origin, if any, of the use of the number 76 for various TA supplements: 76 gunmen, 76 aliens, etc. Is it related to the page count of the supplement?

Called so because they contain 76 of whatever is in it (76 Gunmen, say). The 76 bit follows, I presume, the original CT supplement 76 Patrons.

Yes, but why 76 in the first place? The BITS supplements all use 101, which is a little more understandable than a number like 76.

Is 76 just a random number they chose, or was that the number of patrons they could cram into the format of the first supplement of that type, or what?

Judging from Suplement 6 it could just have been a case of, "that's how much fit." But note that in the content they have 60 patrons and 16 mercenary tickets. Two good round numbers. For the question of, "Did they plan it that way or did they run out of space?" I have to admit that I do not know. I will however say that the BITS books were named in imitation of the old DGP book for MT 101 Vehicles.
