Packet Freighter Picture (WIP)

I started this design ages ago before dropping it and working on something else. I've finally gotten round to finalising it!

Concept is a small cargo ship designed to operate from water as well as dry land.

I haven't worked out the exact displacement, although the door on the upper structure will give you an idea.

Cool. Except for the frame breaking size ;)

Reminds me of something. A RealWorld airplane? Same larger diameter nose than aft...

A RealWorld water ship? Another sci-fi space ship? It might even have been your own earlier post of it if you did :)

That's gonna bug me to no end now...

I think I had in mind the front of the Vought Corsair, and old Soviet submarines, but I've not posted it before, but perhaps there's a design thread from other models leaking through:

What software are you using, please?

Love the name "Skipjack", by the way. Deserves to be its own class.

For any one that cares, the ship displaces about 700 tons.

Hmmmm, should I design it under Book 2 or Book 5..... :-)

T5 :)

Toss out the basic stats and you'll have volunteers lining up to design it in a handful of different systems for you.

There ya go. I guarantee it will get Book 2 and High Guard stats, will most likely get a stab by T5, and could fetch MgT and MT designs as well.

More designs than you can shake a stick at.

Heck, in the absence of hard data, we're going to just design it anyway.

So Far-Trader, here's what we've got:

SkipJack-class Freighter or Cargo Carrier.
  • 700 tons.
  • Floatation hull for water landings.
  • Landers and lifters for ground landings.
  • Maneuver-1.
  • Jump-3 (i.e. Similar to 600t Liner and 800t Merc Cruiser for jump legs).
  • Thus, Power Plant-3.
  • Mostly cargo -- the AT 3,000t freighter for general inspiration re cargo vs passenger.
  • 8 passenger staterooms, perhaps.

Many thanks for this outline, you've confirmed much of my initial thoughts on performance and accommodation. I'll probably have to stick with what I know for the design which is CT.

I am curious as to how you came by the name. As I am one of the members of COTI who are local to the Chesapeake Bay, which is where the Skipjacks were both built and sailed. I have actually been on one under sail. Beutiful schooners, classic lines.

Nice choice though, my Great Grandfather captained the John D, a Skipjack out of Christfield, Maryland. It was what they used to call a packet boat. He carried crabs, oysters and fresh produce to Baltimore, and brought back mail, packages and food stuffs. The sextent and his Sailing Masters license is still in the family.

I can't say for sure, it seemed to just pop into my head. However, I was looking at submarines for design inspiration, and the USS Skipjack was one of several I looked at.

It was probably bubbling away in my subconscious waiting for the right moment !

Fair enough, it was a sub, and it was the proverbial free trader as a packet ship.

Most of the data for the T5 version (sans itemized cost, fittings, and computer) is here:

Code:
700) Airframe floatation hull
  20 Bridge
   - Surface Comm-10
   1 Antenna EMS-12
   - Surface Scope-11
  35 Jump drive F
   7 Maneuver drive D
  19 Power plant F
252 Fuel (one jump 3 and 2 weeks power)
   3 Beam Laser-12 x 3
   1 Sandcaster-11
   3 Missile-10 x 3
21 Fast launch in minimal hangar
  32 Passenger staterooms (8)
3 Senior officer stateroom (1, or 2 junior)
3 Ratings quarters (4 ratings in bunks)
 333 Cargo

 Approximate cost: MCr 136

Hans is correct - if you use Book 2, you should bump the volume to 600 or 800 tons, or else interpolate the drive numbers.

Or might I suggest using Traveller, version 5. It's compatible with the low end of Book 2. In my (biased) opinion, it has the ease of Book 2 design, and the scope of MegaTraveller vehicle design.
