PBEM T20 >>

Falkayn

SOC-13
Looking for a T20 PBEM game. I don't really have the time to run one, but I'd sure like to play!

I've seen a couple come and go, but nothing that interested me. My preferences (in no particular order) would be:
* SpecOps Team
* Spies/Spooks
* Merchant Lords
* Diplomatic Envoys

Anyone wanting to run one?

[EDIT] I've found a great website that could host T20 games pretty easily, and that has all the die roller and character sheet functions you'd want from that sort of site:
Roleplay Online

I've sort of been pondering doing a "piracy" campaign... with the PCs as pirates... but I've got a lot going on at the moment... I will no more in a month or so...

I might be interested. SpecOps and Pirates seem the most interesting. Tell me when you know more, we can exchange contact info.

Are you looking at running something in your Gothic Nebula campaign setting? It does look interesting, and I could imagine playing a Cognizant - even though it would still leave my yearnings to be a Scout unfulfilled.

What's day to day life like in Gothic Nebula? That's the question that makes me either want to be part of a game world, or turns me off it. SLA Industries is a fun game - but the world itself was so depressingly morbid that I found no game could last more than one session.

Everyday life is similar to the OTU in that it isn't a dystopian future. However, civilization is the underdog here, not the reigning champion. Human space is vast, but it is a flyspeck in the expanse of unknown, potentially dangerous wilderness around it. Human space contains its own threats to itself - megacorporations are one of the props of human civilzation, but are also one of the threats to it. Competition between the megacorps is ruthless, to the point of espionage and assassination. This, I suppose, is rather dystopian - but it's also piratical and full of pinstriped, swashbuckling flair.

The frontier region is a checkerboard of alliances, and insignificant planets are really backwaters until they become pawns in the manuevering of the interstellar powers. Merchants have to be alert to the fact that they cross interstellar borders and disputed zones often - they aren't just coasting from point to point along the trade lanes of the comfy Third Imperium.

Does that answer? "Everyday life" is rather a hard matter to compass, though I understand exactly why you ask.

Sounds OK (even tho' I had to use a dictionary to remind myself what dystopian meant).

Would you allow me to play a kishoto-wielding Sishzir'jiit? :D

(I only ask because I love the d20 Martial Arts and Psionics rules Ken's put together - properly used* they are nicely balanced)

* At the least every bad guy needs to have access to some martial arts training in order to be a threat to the PCs.

The other idea would be a Cognizant gambler with Manipulation and a huge INT (because 2 skill points is really low!).

How do you think you'd handle PC creation and career paths? I can imagine joining the Marines and taking levels in Cognizant + Marine, but is there a career path for Cognizant on its own?

[EDIT:] Would you be happy using the http://rpol.net website for the game? It's actually PBB not PBEM, but nice in that it offers dice rollers, etc.

I must say you'll have to go with the cognizant - my ninja character class is about as complex as I can get with martial arts.

Yes, we can use the roleplay online site. I'll look into getting a game set up.

As to the career path, I'm working on that. More shortly.

Here we go:

A Cognizant taking the political service suite of class feats uses the Prior History tables of a Professional, but does not roll for promotions – upon mustering out, Cognizants are treated as Rank O3.

A Cognizant taking the military service suite of class feats uses the Prior History table for Marine, Army, or Mercenary, as desired. The Cognizant will automatically be ranked as O2, and will make promotion checks at a DC of 19.

I also posted it to the website.

So I'd still be interested, if someone teaches me the D20 mechanic. I'd prefer to use the OTU, but that's open.

Jame,

I'd be happy to show you the d20 ropes, they're really not that hard - Wizards tried to make the core mechanic simpler with 3e, so it's easy to get a grip on. The hard part is usually choosing from the plethora of character creation options available - but a good character concept helps there.

If you can come up with the sort of character you'd prefer, it's easy to run the dice for the Prior History, see what choices that makes for you, and then choose the rest based on your character idea.

The basic d20 mechanic is this you have a Difficulty Class (a DC) that you need to meet, roll 1d20, add your skill bonus and see if you meet it.

For combat your skill bonus is your Base Attack Bonus (BAB), modified by your knowledge of the weapons you're using (represented by weapon feats - some of which can make you VERY good with a certain weapons in certain situations). The DC is set to your opponent's Armor Class (AC), and your roll is modified by distance (weapons have range bands, e.g. 10m, within 10m you are at +0, at 10m-20m you are at -2, at 20m-30m you are at -4, etc.), and then other factors like cover come into play.

If you don't have a skill, then either you can't do the task (e.g. brain surgery), or you just use your ability bonus (if you have one).

Sometimes you need to make a saving throw, this will either be for Fortitude, Reflexes, or Willpower. Appropriate ability scores give bonuses to you saves, as does your levels.

As your character goes up in level they get more skill points to spend on skills, sometimes can learn new feats, and usually increase in BAB and saving throws. They will also get more Stamina (the ability to take a bruinsing wound and keep going - think of it as an old boxer building up scar tissue and getting tougher as they age).

There are some ideas that are a little confusing, you have both class levels and character levels to track*, but the game is overall pretty easy to play.

* If I'm a 3rd level Marine, 2nd level Merchant, then my character levels are 3+2=5, and my class levels are either 3 or 2, depending upon which class is being used.

So Mythmere, do you want to start a new thread for the game, or just get setup on rpol.net and then tell us all to join in?

I've been doodling with character ideas, but are you going to trust our Prior History rolls, or do you want to watch them? What about Psionics? :D

What about a point buy system for basic stats with clearly defined boundaries? IE: no 18 soc or psy?

You know there was a guy that set up an entire board to play traveller on. The address is http://pub97.ezboard.com/btravellert20
and he would probably be willing to have other GM's use his site.

If you take the normal 'challenging' campaign points of 28, divide by 6 and then multiply by 8, you end up with 37 points. Enough to give you a nice mix of stats.

There are enough random dice rolls in Prior History that the GM wouldn;t want to do them for you, and yet would want to see the results himself. Doing on the rpol.net boards makes some sense in that regard.

Unfortunately a board like that doesn't have a dice roller, which means trying to use external ones. A custom built board like rpol.net or herocentral.net (for HERO games only :( ) offers much better service for an RPG.

I am also interested in joining a PBEM game if it gets setup, I had along carrerin CT "back in the day" and I am finding T20 interesting, I only have access to the t20lite rules at this time but I can get by with a little coaching, would prefer OTU as a setting but can get along in another.

Let me know when this is going to start, It is hard to find other gamer where I am, Northern Maine!!!!!!

Thanks

Aramond (Scout at heart since 80')

The name of the game is Gothic Nebula 1, on Roleplay online. I'm still working on the internal structure of RPO, so there's just an introduction at present. Send your characters in for approval, though.

rpol.net link here

Okay: this game is ready for players. Falkayn and I have been testing it out using his character generation, and it appears to work well so far.

Go to RPOL and request access to me on the Gothic Nebula 1 game. Give me at least the proposed name for your character so I can set you up with that name.

The link to my web site in my sig block will give you a fair amount of campaign information.

I will let the party do absolutely anything they can think of in terms of party objectives, with one caveat: you must have a unified goal (all pirates, all corporate mercenaries, etc).
