Permission to come aboard

Hello.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've been playing and collecting Traveller since 1981 and it's so good to see it going in all forms all these years later. For me, it's still the best RPG ever made.

Looking forward to waxing lyrical with fellow fans, getting ideas for games and chilling out.

Strephon Lives!

Nick

Wellcome aboard then. Everyone is wellcome to discuss Traveller (and to some extent other games) issues in this board, as long as rules are kept.

Welcome!!! I haven't been here a year yet but I can tell you that is not only the single most knowledgeable Traveller community out there, but also a genuinely nice bunch of people.

Seriously though, if you have a question about *anything* at all that is even remotely related to Traveller, no matter how obscure, I bet someone here will have the answer for you in a level of detail that you didn't know existed. :)

well ... most of the time ....

:coffeesip:
:coffeegulp:
:D
Yeah, most of the time.

The problem is that the reputation for hard-nosed behavior is actually a mischaracterization of "rather strictly enforced rules" and "The staff will no longer tolerate trolling nor name-calling at all," coupled with a prior lack of actual sanctions enforced by prior admins having created a wild-west kind of feel...

And some of it dates to before I was on staff (and that's a while back)... Hunter and Andrew, may they both rest in peace, both had a tendency to only enforce the rules when it got egregious, and then people perceived it as capricious.

Plus, they let the pit be a totally unmoderated zone. Which was no good at all for our rep.

Remember: There are people who like each edition of Traveller... including the World Of Darkness adaptation, the AD&D adaptation, and even TNE... ;)

I'm also a member of The Miniatures Page and Board Game Geek. Seeing people lose their cool over rules and favourite games is nothing new to me.

...I am not one of those people.

Welcome & WTF.

Welcome aboard, Nick!

Thanks for choosing CotI for your Traveller experience. :)

Now, Aramis, World of Darkness, AD&D Traveller? By the the Elder Space Cows, that smacks of Heresy!

No seriously, those are real Traveller adaptations?

Didn't used to be so nice. The admins keep the peace around here.

All praise the mighty and just Admins, May they always rule.

May the ban-hammer fall with righteous might upon the flamer, and may the spammer be sent to the eternal damnation of the life time ban...

Blessed be those who adhere to the ToU, and observe the holy writ of net-i-quette. For long shall their days upon this board will be long, and great joy in mutual good natured quibbling over arcane minutia will be had by all.

welcome aboard oh wondering soul, at last have reached the blessed place of COTI, rest and find your place among the faithful.

And may the heart of the Web-Troll be turned to stone before the radiant splendour of their countenances . . .

Okay, enough of the kowtowing, and back to Nick.

So... 1981. I really envy you. I was stuck in TSR-land. Which was fine, mind you, but if I had only given Traveller a chance back in 1981...!

It was because I, and a few others at school, were fed up with D&D that we defected to Traveller.

The school D&D group were infested with power gamers, monty haul adventures and hack n' slay stuff (plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose) so a few of us wanted to try Traveller, which at that time was riding high with positive reviews and plenty of new releases. Of course it took us a while to get the hang of Traveller but we never looked back.

Ah the good ole days of ruckus and mayhem

no thanks. remember malenfant? but. I was reading through the rules for suspended/banned accounts and noticed that suspended accounts have their displayed name color changed to reflect their suspension. since changes in display can be implemented, I think for every infraction point we should get little angry-face emoticons next to our displayed name. that would be cool.

Sounds like good times to me. How would you describe your group's playing styles? Were you the referee, or did someone else get the job, or was it on rotation?

While I COULD implement that, I won't. (It'd just take a PHP loop invoking output based upon a dbase lookup fed into a local variable for loop control.)

I really prefer to avoid shaming systems as part of behavior modification unless there is compelling reason otherwise. The moderated users being green - whether new user or naughty user - is to increase staff awareness of needing to check for the little green man icon that indicates a moderated post, and to get moot members to hit the reputation scales more often.

yeah. it's not the powers, it's the game that counts. I remember a bunch of clerics in a captured m105, riding around "blessing" everything ... not that I approved, mind you, but everyone seemed to be having a grand old time ....

and besides, are factor t meson guns and world-wide computer systems and battledress and fgmp-15's any less monty-haul?

well, when I had my infraction point, nobody knew it but me. seemed kinda lonesome on display there in my private profile page. seemed like something that ought to be shared, like cigarettes behind the school gym ....
