Pimped some guns for Traveller

I went crazy last night and worked up some guns with the Pimp Your Gun application online. Holy Tools of Destruction, that's an addictive little app! Anyway here's the address for those of you who haven't found it (all hail the developers - I am sooo not worthy!): http://pimpmygun.doctornoob.com/

Anyway, here's what I came up with for the OTU stuff, and my line of powerguns (ala' Hammer's Slammers from when I was a kid and everyone insisted laser rifles and PGMP's weren't cool enough back in the day. They do bridge a gap, though).

Gauss Pistol

Gauss SMG (with folding stock and holosight)

Carbine (with folding stock)

Rifle (It is larger than the carbine, but the scaling doesn't work so well here when I posted the pic)

Military Grade Automatic Shotgun (with gyroscopic compensator in stock, holosight, and under barrel grenade launcher typically for breaching and gas rounds)

Riotgun (IMTU these are semi-auto designs made for CQB and favored by ship crews since they get better DM's at Close and Short range. Often equipped with underbarrel launcher for flechette or canister grenades.

And finally ....IMTU these bridged the gap when Mercenary first came out between lasers and high energy weapons. To all intents and purposes they are the powerguns from Hammers Slammers as I interpreted them, but less omnipotent. It gave players a magazine fed high energy assault weapon and pistol that also would blow a hole in the side of their ship or require battle dress (though they do have quite a kick).

If anyone wants the CT and Striker stats I can give them.

TL-13 1cm Pistol
TL-13PowerPistol.jpg

TL-13 2cm Semi-auto Rifle

TL-15 1cm Pistol
TL-15PowerPistol.jpg

TL-15 Automatic Rifle
This one fires 1 or 5 round bursts. If used in burst mode the 50 round drum is required since it also has extra juice to power the gun, and more importantly - extra nitrogen to cool the barrel so the weapon won't gang-fire as described in the stories. So this particular one has the drum.

Oopa, speaking of high energy weapons.....

PGMP-14
Note the anti-grav unit attached to the forward grip.

OK, finally, honest!

FGMP-15
Note reduced size of anti-grav unit, but it still needs recoil-dampening stock.

Stats and some "color text" would make them ideal for the next few issues of Freelance Traveller...

I am re-writing all the descriptions to go with the pictures in a "supplement" to give to my players even as we speak. It has the stats and "color" as it applies in my game so the players can have it handy as a reference instead of always handing around my battered and ancient notebooks.

I'll send you the packet when I'm done and you can take what you want from it to use. I'll include the required permission boilerplate. Should be ready in a day or two at most.

BTW: sabredog there was already a Gun Pimping thread,

http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/showthread.php?t=20806

I really need to get out more and cruise the other threads. I found out about the app when a friend at work showed how I could use it to test out various bits of what my wife calls "gun-candy" on my AR's and shotguns.

Then I went nuts and when I staggered out of the room hours later I had come up with pics for Traveller. I'm trying to cut back, though, but it's hard because my hands start shaking and I get twitchy when I think about just getting another little, very little taste...

Addictive indeed, and muchly appreciated additions there sabredog :)

A couple minor nags if you feel like addressing* them:

The Gauss SAW could stand to have the drum magazine shifted up some imo. To line up with the barrel. I'd probably even have scaled it up some (you did find the scaling tool there, very handy) as well. Possibly as much as the max 200% and make it a truly prodigious capacity for full autofire support.

Likewise the drum on the AR15 Powergun could come up some imo to line up with the barrel. Size is good though.

The Mil Auto Shotgun would be sweater with the GL shifted back just a bit, so the trigger guard interfaced with the magazine frame. Though I suppose you could put that down to the rack system and being adjusted for reach ;)

But that's all minor, very nice additions to the arsenal. Some very creative bits used. Thanks again for sharing :D

* annoyingly the application doesn't seem to support saving as a WIP so "fixing" things after closing is a major pain so don't sweat it.

Sweet SD! I hope you don't mind me copying them right out of the thread! Great job!

Go ahead, thanks. I tried to make them similar enough within each family of weapon types, and not go crazy with all the additions that they'd look believable and have a sense of balance to them. Like you could imagine how they'd feel if you picked one up.

...interestingly I was playing with PMG and shut down for a bit, using the Hibernate option in WinXP and when I fired it all back up (a bit of an experiment) my gun work in progress was all reloaded and ready to continue. I figured there should be a way to save the work but still don't know how. Apparently Hibernate will do it but I couldn't get any web page save options to do it. Anyone know enough to figure it out and explain it?

Kludge option: Just keep opening tabs or windows of PMG work and only quit out via Hibernate :)

Yes, I hate that since I keep finding little things to add or replace myself since I'm swapping parts out all over..a flash hider here for a magrail part, add this to look like a power jack... and then I have to start all over. That's fun too, but a man needs time to eat and raise his kids, too!

I'll probably transfer all these to PhotoShop and work more on textures and such later (like that'll really happen more than once then I'll get distracted by some other project) and I should be able to move things around with that app. What really annoyed me is the last magnet part on the Gauss SAW and rifle is lower than the others by half a tick, but it's probably just me. I build models on commission and for fun, too so that sort of detail really jumps out at me.

The drum mags, well, yeah...the one on the SAW could be higher, but I don't know about the size? The ammo is pretty small and if you increase the ammo capacity then the batteries need to be increased, and the thing is already bigger and has more power than the rifle version.... good point though, I suppose in an emplaced position or on a vehicle you could just hook it up to a local power source and set up a big box with a linkless feed. Then it'd be the TL-12 version of an HMG. Probably you can get bull barrels for that so they don't burn out magnets too fast or something.

The grenade launcher on the shotgun: I just wanted to make sure there was going to be enough clearance for magazine handling even if you were in combat armor or wearing heavy gloves. It'd be better to have a closed trigger on the launcher, too, but hey - "professionals" ought to know what they are doing and the app wasn't giving me a realistically balanced look otherwise.

Improved Gauss SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon):

GaussSAWmod2.jpg

After thinking about what Far-Trader said and rummaging around my old notes for a Cyberpunk campaign here's what I've improved on this puppy using something I came up with to make a similar series of gauss weapons for that campaign:

Gauss Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW)

Heavier duty, fully automatic version of the gauss rifle, the gauss SAW is capable of a higher sustained rate of fire and can be used as either a man-portable weapon or mounted on a vehicle. The weapon comes equipped with a bipod, laser designator mounted in the foregrip (with both IR and visible light modes as selectable by the operator), a folding carry grip, and electronic battlesights (thermal imaging and telescopic holosight).

The weapon operates on the same basic principles as the gauss rifle and uses the same ammunition. The main difference is in the heavier barrel and magrail system to allow greater rates of sustained fire without overheating and failing. While previous versions of the weapon have been able to use the same magazines as the gauss rifle, it was found that this option was rarely used by the soldiers in the field, who instead wanted a higher ammunition capacity than the 200 round drums, or 40 round magazines. Accordingly, Kemmer-Lansing Gbmh has developed the G-SAW MkII mod B...called the "zipper" or "zipgun" by the troops who use it.

The 1000 rd belt box magazine allows the weapon to fire 50 rd bursts which give it the improved ability to engage up to 5 targets at a time with two chances to hit each for 4D6 damage per hit using the same ammunition and modifiers for armor and range as the gauss rifle. The belt is actually a thin plastic strip with the needle rounds embedded within it. The battery inside the magazine powers the weapon and a geared drive motor in the receiver.

When the cap is stripped off the factory sealed magazine the end of the ammo belt pops out, ready to be engaged by the ammo feed drive. The drive pulls the belt through the receiver chamber where the rounds are accelerated down the barrel by the magrail system. If a round fails to disengage from the plastic belt then the drive merely continues to pull the belt out of the chamber to allow smooth feeding of the following rounds on the belt. This chaindrive (as developed in the 20th century) ensures no jamming occurs in a properly maintained weapon. Failure of rounds is found to be less than 1% so no significant loss of firepower results.

If the weapon is used in an emplacement position, such as a bunker, or on a vehicle pintel mount it can be jacked into the local power source and larger capacity ammunition drums, called "Garrison Cans" and loaded with 5000 rounds, can be used to feed the weapon.

Warning: the use of these cans requires the use of an external power source to operate the weapon since these ammunition sources do not contain batteries. The manufacturer assumes no liability for malfunction of the weapon should this warning be disregarded.

Length: 1,000mm, Weight, Unloaded: 6,000 grams (1000 round drum: 2,500 grams). Base price: Cr6,000 (1000 round drum Cr800). Tech Level 12.

Playing around with some textures and patterns in Photoshop to make these gun look even better (lightsourcing, shadows, n' such). Just a quickie then I need to check the turkey:
