Perhaps the beam of the Death star merely starts a transition to the allotropic iron state, and then triggers the power reaaction, but without controls....

Using a disine like Matthew Reilly (a realy good Aussie authour) outlined in his book Temple (Pan, 2000, ISBN 0-330-36214-3)about TL8-9 for a starting example of a Planet Buster. it'll kill a planet dead, it may not blow it to smitherieans but it'll be just as dead and not their taking up it's orbit any more.
