MGT Only: Planet Mongoose - Pre-career Education

We have just posted an article on Pre-career Education for Traveller on Planet Mongoose, which you can find here;

We may be using these rules for future supplements, so by all means let us know what you think!

Haven't had a chance to thoroughly look over it yet, but pre-career education was definitely something I always felt needed to be included in MgT, as it was in other Traveller rulesets. Thanks for the post.

Since you announced it here and linked to it here, this seems like a good place for feedback.

Generally well done and a good Mongoose-ifying of the old Classic Traveller options.

One question that struck me when reading it was whether you get ALL of the success options or need to pick from the list. I assumed 'all' but thought that it should be spelled out. For Example, do I get skill-1, skill-2, +2 Edu, chance for Med School, and auto-commission in Navy?

One suggestion to improve it (just my personal taste) would be to offer the chance for an Academic Advanced Education along side Medical School and Flight School. Join the Navy with a PhD in Engineering or the Merchants with a PhD in Economics.

That would also potentially work well with Agent, Noble, Scouts, and (particularly) Scholar Careers (and perhaps some others in other books as well).

Advanced degree work essentially *is* the Scholar career under a different label.

Does the education option count as your first career for Basic Training? If it does count but doesn't provide as useful a "basic training" for Scholars as simply going into Scholar as your first career, then it is flawed from the start. Anything that costs a character their Basic Training run of zeros needs to compensate for that.

Since Mongoose is considering a 2nd Edition for some of their Traveller products, perhaps some modification to "Scholar" can be considered.

There is a difference between the advanced degrees you get as you are pursuing your education as a scholar, and your actual time working in the profession (post-education) as a Scholar.

Perhaps one could even divide between an "Enlisted" rank (w/ prior Bachelor's Degree) as a technician/assistant, vs. an advanced "Officer" rank as a titled professional in the field (having previously completed the higher level Master/PhD degree).

Less than you might think. The activities vary a bit, but in terms of skill acquisition (in Traveller terms) both are absorbing Knowledges and/or Sciences, picking up a bit of Instruction skill here and there, and (depending on the field) getting muddy in the field and/or annoying librarians, making connections, professional allies and rivals, and publishing papers. The PhD doesn't change that very much.

I have had a chance to read over the post more thoroughly. Some thoughts:
1) Under Military Academy, you may want to consider adding "Merchant Academy" to the list, with the associated Merchant service assignment specified as Merchant Marine;

2) Depending on viewpoint, you may want to allow Marines the option of Flight School as well if you envision them operating their own assault/landing craft, as opposed to Naval pilots;

3) Should graduation (w/o honors) from Medical School after Military Academy perhaps automatically grant an officer commission, with Honors perhaps allowing a start at Officer Rank O2 (or O3)?

4) Events Table Entry #6: I believe you mean " . . . become involved in a tightly-knit Clique", not a Cliché .

Otherwise I think it looks really good.
