Man, I almost feel guilty for not standing in line...but I forgot my body armor.
Seriously, I have been playing games for years. In Buffalo, New York, where I grew up, pinball machines were classified as gambling devices so there were none inside the city limits.
So, I became a video enthusiast. I remember pouring quarters into Pong, Battlezone, Red Baron, Wizard of Wor, etc.
ad nauseam.
I was always too poor to buy new systems when they were fresh. Bought my Atari 2600 after Nintendo came out, my first Nintendo after the Super...happen to have a Playstation II because I worked a long bit of overtime two years ago, and just got a Gamecube last year.
Even PCs are old school withg me. Foryears I had a Radio Shack Color Computer that worked just fine. Even now, I can't run demos from magazines like PC Gamer because my PCs never have enough memory.
IMHO, an excess of computing power has made designers lazy. Rather than elegamce, we get brute force. Add to that a marketing and news 'frenzy' and we come to what we have here. Disgusting, etc is exactly right.
