Non OTU: Pleasure Planet

Chuck Anumia

SOC-14 1K
Has anyone got any information about a pleasure planet? (a planet that has been set up solely to provide pleasure to visitors?)
What pleasures would be available?
I want to set one up but I have no idea what it would look like

Las Vegas meets Disneyland meets New Orleans?
Westernworld at one place and Medieval world on another?
Gamblers paradise next to the buffet?
Trader Jim's Imperial Emporium where anything and everything is for sale?
StarChukc's (tm) coffeeJuice and smoke shop?
Patricia's Pleasure Palace?
What is missing?

IIRC, there was a Challenge article about a vacation planet, but I cannot tell you wich issue was it in, nor the name of the planet...

The planet was a vacational ressort living mostly on turistic industry.

The product that comes to mind is Casino Galactica for Space Opera. The complex is described as having a casino, hotel, mall, restaurants, show rooms, theatre, golf courses, ski lodge, target range and an entire mountain valley for hunting and camping. It is not an entire planet however.

Trouble

Hmm, you need to remember all those tourists who look for things like mountain climbing, fishing (from trout fly fishing to deep sea fishing), hunting, hiking, going very low tech for a while, surfing, and simply those who want to get away from modern urban living and work for a while and vegetate on a beach in the sun.

Not everyone likes Las Vegas and Disney. Personally, I like Disney (Land and World), but only go to Las Vegas for friends get-togethers. Food is good, but zero interest in gambling. Hoover Dam is quite impressive.

And then you have those who like a cruise ship. That probably would not work on a pleasure planet unless you had some spectacular ocean side scenery and some interesting deep sea air-breathing animals.

Or what about a grav-vehicle "sail-barge" that slowly crosses a very scenic land (or other more "exotic/unusual") region. Similar in concept to an ocean cruise, but differing in environment.

Hmmm, that would work. Maybe over something like the Amazon in flood with grav-belt excursions.

Great Ideas!

Yes!
I like these ideas (and bought the Kamsii survey book for references).
I'll set up Rail service, grav vehicle treks and cruise ships for the oceans.
I am thinking people may be willing to come even in low berths for a 1 month all expenses paid trip *(with some guests willing to take as much as 4 weeks to get there and 4 weeks to get back while Nobles may want to spend 4 weeks getting there 4 months there and 4 weeks getting back home on the Jump 6 Luxury Liners available from the planet's transportation pool)

HMmmm...

Maybe a Farmer wants to be a government employee or Senator?
I could call a new session of the Senate into conference to make changes to the government every week as a new cast of guests come in.
OR
A Senator wants to be a gardener (or jockey, or knight, or fisherman, or writer, or painter, or musician, race car driver, Aircraft Pilot, Pirate or preacher?)

Wargames

Perhaps War-games?
Select a dozen periods in time and recreate wars from them?
Crusades?
Revolution (US and France) ?
Civil War?
WWI?
WWII?
Korea?
Viet Nam?
Iraq?
Vilani?
First Frontier War?
Perhaps even create simulators for starship battles like in Ender's Game?

A couple of excerpts from my joke advertisement for Jack Stevenson's roleplaying game GAERPHS (Grand All-Encompassing RolePlaying Holo-System). (Full article can be found on JTAS Online). They're for table-top1 gaming, but they could be used for live roleplaying too. At least, some of them could:
1 Or rather, holo-tank.
"A Vilani voyager dodging Ancient gods in the Age of Exploration; a Terran Confederation officer struggling to restore order in the aftermath of the Nth Interstellar War; a Magyar reaver lord running a pocket empire during Twilight; a Fornician freightereer battling the economic stranglehold of the Mora merchants in the late Antebellum; a cruiser captain fighting for his emperor during the Civil War; a private agent defending his employer against the Patriarch’s minions during the Credo Social War."

And some What-If worlds:

"What if the Ziru Sirka had prevailed against the Terran Confederation? What if the Aslan had been able to cooperate during the Long Night? What if the Maghiz had not happened? What if the Sacnoth Dominate had never fallen? What if Cleon I had failed to get the Vilani to join the Imperium? What if Gustus had defeated Arbellatra? What if the psionics had won the Psionics Suppressions? Now you can know. You can be a Terran Confederation admiral leading a rebellion against the Aslan overlords or a freedom fighter battling psionic masterminds and killer robots to restore the Imperium."

& big game hunting?

Or in my case visiting historical sites, I had my honeymoon in Antigua & managed to fit in a day at Nelson's dockyard.

That Blows My Mind!

Makes me think of Total Recall (the original, of course).

YES!
Do you want to be the interstellar Spy that gambles in his tuxedo, gets the girl and saves the Emperor's life?

You won the Lottery, What do you do now?

You are a member of the Fellowship of the Ring and Sauron wants you dead!

You desire to join the circus and be a clown?

I love this :)

But I'd say not just wars but historical periods for people interested in living history. You could have old Terran farming homesteads (possibly a slightly historically inaccurate version of Little House on the Prairie) and Vilani communities from the pre Rule of Man era.

You could draw on real world examples like Native American Clubs in Germany http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwo...ians-touching-and-occasionally-surreal-148331, and Celtic/Dark Age communities in UK and Ireland. Here's a Danish Medieval version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middelaldercentret Its experimental archeology but in the future it could be a tourism attraction.

I can see wilderness areas of a Pleasure Planet dotted with enclaves themed on a particular period or culture isolated from each other by tracts of primeval forest. I'd leave the potential for parties to encounter each other, (Vikings versus Native Americans anybody?).

If you want to stick to the war games theme you could offer the full experience starting with a basic training camp and moving on to frontline warfare, maybe with short stay battle packages and longer campaign options. With Traveller tech you could go for all out realism except for permanent death.

The comedian Tim Allen once suggested two theme parks for guys, or rather, two sides to the same theme park. A sandbox for rich kids.

One is Construction World-- you get to operate heavy equipment- bulldozers, cranes, graders, and so on-- to build roads and dams and buildings.

The other is Destruction World-- you get to emplace explosives or use bulldozers and wreck roads and dams and bridges and buildings, likely the ones the last batch of builders just put up last week. Option: using tanks or other heavy weapons works, too.

Switch the two halves back and forth as needed.

While you're at it, how about a demolition derby track, too?
