I have tried to inspire and maybe prompt people into replying. Sept 11 has been effected millions but I don't seem to be one of them. As tragic as that event and those are continuing now in Afganistan are. I feel for the families who have lost their loved ones and those who are continuing to feel the pain of loss whether Afghan or American. I have tried to remain rational and cool about it all.
I think most of us are getting back into the grind of work and school has also contributed to the decline in posts. This is not the endorsement of Bush's let's get back to work slogan but rather the looking at the odds and probabilities. I feel safe. For fear only has remedy: knowledge.
A Canadian philosopher was once asked when was the moment that he had the deepest and most pronounced thought. He answered:
"When I was in one of National Parks and I was portaging back to my camp. I saw a large black bear going through my camp. At the camp, I had all my food, gun, and all means to scare the bear away. At that point, I froze and started thinking about all things that I knew about bears. Using a a paddle and the bottom of the canoe he was able to scare the bear away."
So it is with me and Sept. 11. There are more important things to worry about. Mainly to find work in my profession. But enough about me.
Plus, another factor I think we are all waiting for maybe controversy or the next gem to come our way from Avery/Marc or Hunter. But my feeling is that we have to become more proactive by voicing our desires.
Marc once had a wish that Traveller grow into a fan based community akin to Star Wars or Star Trek. Well, Traveller is a long way from achieving that goal, unfortunately. Mainly because we are so silent.
We know have the best game out there on the market but should not stop us from further developing links to form a virtual community that we can put pressure upon agencies within our real communities (namely, FLGS but also other SF communities, gaming and reading).
Building the links like that was part of what made Classic Traveller so great. There were many novelists in the 1980s & 1990s who credit RPGs as their starting point. Not only because it provided them with a captive and protected market but also to inspire the sense of wonder that has been part of the SF tradition since the Hugo-Greenbach era.
I continue to get inspired what is new. Not to navel gaze about the old. As much as I like the reprints and GT, I look FORWARD to T5. I know it will not be what I expect to be. Therefore, I look at games like Blue Planet and Fading Suns to find ways to make my Traveller game better. I feel some comfort when I see that the designers do the same.
Similarly, I am excited about T20 coming as a Christmas present. I have seen their upcoming product line and it looks like Traveller is in good hands.
So keeping the flame alive requires that we stoke the fire. Not by putting all things to be consumed by one annihilating flame but spreading the fire from person to person. So that they glow from the enthuasism that we have.
So this has been a long diatribe...So apparently there is something like 325 members on this board, I urge each one of you: Get active, get involved, be part of the movement of change and spread the word.
