Prefabricated Colony Modules

The Tirovski-Yang Consortium Inc presents these premade, ship-portable colony modules, available for shipment to any colony site in T-Y-C's Kaban-class freighters. The units are pressurised, rugged and self-powered. They have two main airlocks leading to its sides, and another on the module's belly, allowing for tunnels to be constructed to connect different modules on a world without a breathable atmosphere.

Note that the small power plants provided with each unit (except, ofcourse, for the main Power Plant unit, with an output of 72EP [18,000MW]) is intended as a backup; the main Power Plant units will provide power under normal coinditions.

Also note that the "staterooms" provided in the non-Residental modules represent facilities such as life support, lounges, emergency medical facilities and so on; the workers live in the Residental units.

(also note: these modules are expensive as they are intended to provide a pressurised environment; non-pressurised dwellings would, ofcourse, cost far, far less).

(The non-standard components are detailed here).

Very interesting. Any thoughts on layout for the bigger modules? How are they intended to be anchored - stilts, pylons or slab foundations, dug in, etc.?

Frobably slab foundations or cleared bedrock, with connecting tunnels dig in using fusion tunneling devices.

Why the connecting tunnels? Wouldn't overground 'docking tubes' do the job more easily? It's just that if I was going to start tunnelling, I'd probably bury the whole complex to save on radiation shielding (if we're talking vacuum worlds).

With a surface installation, I'd want to limit the amount of site prep-work to a minimum. The slab idea sounds good in that respect, a nice, easy way to get a solid, level base.

You could just excavate a massive pit, put in "piping" and then re-bury. You're going to have to do earth-moving to get a level base for the slabs anyway.

Yes, I know, that's so tech/7 retro ;)

Scott,

Good idea. H. Beam Piper has various cities and facilities built in his THFH mileau much the same way, so it definitely is 'TL7 retro'!

- The Force Command duplicate in Cosmic Computer is built inside a giant hole dug in a mesa which is then filled back in covering the contruction.

- The 'underground' city in Four Day Planet was really built in a small valley between two parallel ridges. Again, once the city was completed, they backfilled the site and covered it up.

In both cases, the sites were buried for protection; 'hellburners' in the Cosmic Computer and the weather in Four Day Planet.

2-4601's modules could be above ground, buried, or partially buried; with all the different connections each requires, depending on the needs of the colony. There's a current thread on the TML talking about an otherwise shirtsleeve world with a daily 50 degree celsius temperature swing. A colony there would definitely be dug in!

Have fun,
Bill

Another good inspiration for habitats of all shapes and sizes is Kinm Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy. It's also an excellent exploration of the politics of extra-terrestrial colonisation.

Yep, I love that book; it was also a good source of inspiration (in part) for the less "mainstream" polities IMTU, especially the Matriarchate (which was also inspired by Dan Simmons' Hyperion series), and some minor details in tha Alliance.
