QND Reddit Chargen

Several statements on Reddit lately about traditional random chargen and player built ones. I worked up a quick and dirty chargen, so I thought I would share it here for any use you may get out of it.

  1. Everyone starts with 777777 stats. Players can rearrange the stats numbers but have to take away from one to increase another. So 687777, 977775, 444AAA, etc.
  2. Determine career, branch/type if applicable, and terms served in the normal 4 year per term aging.
  3. Multiply terms served by 3, these are the points the player can use to buy skills, Personal Development table stats, and rank.
  4. Each skill or PD stat increase is bought from the tables available to that career. Skill level or PD stat costs one point, each rank costs one point and only one rank can be bought per term. Skills acquired by rank do not cost extra.
  5. When done, roll aging and benefits, and assign pension if appropriate.

You could try 56789A for stats and rearrange as you like. With no adding or subtracting - just decide which number for which attribute. It's only 3 more than 777777. Gives the character a little extra more than average, but not a lot more. It's equivalent to 787878.

Yup, that's QND alright, and seems quite reasonable.

I'm factoring in that a lot of characters start as much under the 7 average as over, and giving them 3 points per term some of which they can buff those stats with the career PD. Hard choices.

They also have to make hard choices to give up some skills/stats to make rank, so sort of Gurpsish in that sense. 5 skills/stats to make Rank 5 for those goodies is a serious cost.

And if someone wants to start off with a C stat that badly, I won't get in their way.

Duly noted for those who would prefer less extremes and more buff start.
