Quick Adventure seeds...

I posted this a week or so ago at rpgnet, in answer to what to do for a quick adventure for an evenings entertainment.

It's probably a case of grandmother's sucking eggs, but it may be useful to someone.

Anyway, here's how I do it sometimes, using the tables in LBB3.

Roll 1d for random person encounters, and roll their reactions.

Roll 1d3 for patrons/major NPCs encountered.

Rearrange the encounters to frame a story, and consider where the patron/major NPCs come into things.

Here's an example:
roll of 4 for person encounters, roll of 1 for patron/major NPC

police patrol - non-committal (is this a regular patrol, are they looking for anything in particular?)
bandits - hostile, will attack (what sort of bandits are they, is this who the police patrol is after?)
tourists - responsive (where do the players meet them, are the PCs guides, bodyguards, or part of the group?)
naval security troops - responsive (will they, can they, help against the bandits?)

I'd rearrange in the order: tourists - police - bandits - naval security

The patron/major NPC is a spy (roll again for cover identity) posing as a mercenary.
Is he one of the bandits, part of the tourist party, does he lead everyone to the bandits, is he in league with the naval security troops?

TSR published a DM's helper sometime that had a quick, random adventure generator that I used for TRAVELLER every now and then, when I couldn't think of anything in particular to do to my players. I had to translate things from D&D to TRAVELLER, of course.

Another good play aid is the excellent little program "CT Utility". (sorry, can't remember where I got it) It has an encounter generator function included. It can also generate random NPCs giving UPP, rank, skills and posessions. Look around this site and someone should be able to point you to it.

Best Regards,
Bob
