Range Bands and Movement

Hi All,
I am from Germany, so maybe I didn't find the question or I didn't find something clearly stated in the Rulebook:

I get the concept of Range bands, but as far as I get it, the "Point Zero" is not moving. So, if two ships are moving towards eacht other or two fighters are closing in, one moves from Range Band to Range band away from point zero, the other moves toward point zero.
Question: What is the range between them?
What I can't get my head around:
If you are standing at zero and your opponent in 2, your opponent is 40 m away, you have a distance of 2.
If both of you are (after some running) in Range Band 5 (because you moved towards him and he stayed where he is), you might be up to 499 m away and you get distance 0.
So, logically, the range Band should "move with you", which offers new complications (because your movement at 0 changes more ranbge bands than his at range band 5).
Raising one more question: how do you pursue someone?
Did I miss something?
Dont get me wrong, I love Range bands, but they seem broken...

Range (distance) is the mathematical difference of the two point numbers.
 
Range bands are never simpler than actual distances and movement rates. The harder you look at them the less you'll understand them.

Which is fine if you're playing fast and loose.

I think the best discussion of range bands I've ever seen is in Modiphus's Mutant Chronicles rpg. It really opened up a lot of ways of looking at them an using them. Is it worth $50? Probably not if the setting isn't your thing. But if you get a chance to read the material on range bands it's worth your time.

A good explanation, the verbal definition would be:

The current actor is assigned range 0 and the other target being acted upon has range calculated relative to the actor.
