User heracleides has some amazing rare Traveller stuff on eBay right now at non-ridiculous (I'm looking at you Noble Knight) prices.

I bought a set of Cargonaut Press Imperial Credits that I can't even find a mention of anywhere here or elsewhere on the intertubes. Anyone ever hear of this item? Info?

I would love some of the stuff he has too, but I just can't bring myself to buy his copied material. Even if the original authors are dead or not producing any more, it is still theft.

Yes, prices are exceptionally high at Noble Knight, but these items do seem to be extremely rare...except for heracleides fakes that he keeps listing just because the original copyright holders aren't prosecuting him.

Just to clear up what seems like a misconception, ebay user "heracleides" is Cargonaut Press. I purchased a few things from him and had a brief correspondence, during which he introduced himself as Paul Sanders.

The Imperial Credits and passport are newly manufactured, which is why you won't find any mention of them on the internet. The passport in particular was apparently a project he was working on with Andrew Keith before his untimely death.

I'm not sure about the supplements, but he would certainly be within his rights to reprint and sell them as he sees fit if he is the copyright holder.

Not if it's a derivative work (which is what the Kieth's stuff for traveler all falls under). By licensing, you're admitting derivative status. A lot depends on what Paul and Marc have agreed Paul may do.

AFAIK, Paul's license died with everyone else's in 2008. (Excepting SGJ and Mongoose.)

IP law is ugly stuff.

That's interesting. Would that extend to the player aids as well? Not just the books, but anything with the Traveller name on it?

That would be a bummer, since I really liked them. The passport especially was really well thought-out and obviously had a lot of passion behind it. Though, full disclosure, I'm a sucker for tabletop props.

As far as I can tell, since the early 1990's, 1999, and 2004 copyright changes, it's entirely up to the jury at trial...

The guiding principle is that, if your work relies upon someone else's work to make sense and/or profit, and their work is copyright-protected, barring any memoranda of understanding and/or licenses... you don't have the right to publish at all.

Note that infringement and plagiarism are two VERY different things. Plagiarism isn't actually unlawful, unless it also happens to be copyright infringement.

So, for example, i could modernize Hamlet and have no legal issues, even tho' I claimed it as my own work... but I'd rightly be called on the plagiarism if I don't mention ol' Willy the Bard...

But if I use the same melody line as Achy Breaky Heart for my chorus' entry ... I'd be sued right quick. (I'm not an ASCAP member; I refused to join because of the loss of control over my musical works.)

Keep in mind, Vanilla Ice paid big bucks when the judge decided Ice Ice Baby violated Queen's copyrights on Under Pressure.

I distinctly recall those being sold, ran across an ad in one of the magazines that covered Traveller in the 80s, although I would be hard pressed to remember if it was JTAS, Space Gamer or others. Think it was JTAS.

Didn't buy it then, not buying now, because really you need a stack like monopoly money to cover player action, losses etc. Generic money will do for props in most instances, and of course with modern desktop publishing it would be trivial to create your own.

Here are a few that I just googled in no time at all.

Or Warren Buffett is worshiped in the far future as a mythical figure of commerce-

Hmm here is an intriguing option I didn't know about before now- Star Wars Monopoly money. Squint real hard and that Star Destroyer can look like a Type S on sterioids!

You know, looking at that, that Star Destroyer darn well looks like a Keith drawing, definitely his style. Could it be?

+1 for your user name alone.

Heh heh. Bit of a running joke in my old Traveller group. One of my most oft-played characters was a certain cranky, hard-drinking cetacean security officer/gunner who got around in a set of customized water-filled battle dress armor. For a while, Traveller was known among my friends as "that game with the dolphin in a robot suit". Since I got back into the game and needed to sign up for this site, I knew there was but one choice for my user name... :p

I'm almost certain there were never any imperial credits advertised in JTAS. I own and have read all of them (pre-Challenge issues, anyway), and that's the sort of thing that would have jumped out at me.

And I'd like to add to your list of imperial credit stand-ins if I may. Anyone who wants to drop a good chunk of money to add some "bling" to their table should check out the Futuristic Metal Coins made by Minion Games. They're real spendy if you want to build up a healthy collection, but they're so satisfying to use in play. I've used them the board games Hegemonic and Merchant of Venus, as well as FFG's Star Wars: Edge of the Empire and, of course, Traveller. I really like them. But again, I am a massive fool for player's aids and roleplaying props...

Cargonaut Press wouldn't still have the rights to print traveller rpg stuff

If they are "newly printed" they should be sold as such

there is no way he would have permission to reprint the old zines, they aren't sold as "newly printed" either

he recently tried to sell.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zogorion-20...090403?hash=item1c674b9323:g:LwIAAOSw9a5XPk4k

this is a small press item from a couple of years ago, this doesn't look like it's release though and the author, while amused that someone would go to the trouble of copying his work and selling it, confirmed that they weren't originals

And I'm pretty sure that he didn't acquire the rights for Third Imperium, which is a Canadian Fanzine. If you are purchasing from him, you are basically abetting intellectual property theft.
