Christine Bennett is not one to rest on her laurels. It was unrestrained ambition and superior drive, among other things, that fueled her meteoric rise to flag rank. It was that same drive that would not let her rest in a gentlewoman's retirement on Hastorr.

There were a smattering of people here, other women who had worked for General Bennett or knew her by reputation. After an evening of drinking and telling war stories, a small group of them remained in a private upstairs room. Stormhaven had plenty of such isolated rooms available -- at a price.

Landholder Bennett idly toyed with her ponytail and ordered another round of Stormhaven's Best.

"I miss it."

"Being in the Army? I would think you want as little to do with that former life as possible."

A waiter arrived with a tray filled with shots. Christine took one, downed it immediately, then carelessly threw the empty on the coarse grained table.

"You are a scientist. Interacting with these local life forms, vicious though they are, may be enough for you. Not me."

Her grin, which usually morphed into a full blown smile when she drank, disappeared entirely. Expression changed and hardened, from the set of her jaw to a new gleam in her eyes.

"Kids these days don't have a clue about real war. Push a button, blow up a spaceport. Launch a missile, crack open an asteroid. That's not what war is about."

Silently Christine obtained another filled glass and downed another shot.

"Real war is pointing your rifle at an enemy and pulling the trigger. Seeing his head get blown off by a perfectly placed clip."

Her eyes were unfocused and glassy. Was this a drunken ramble, or something more?

"Real war is using your rifle to give the enemy trooper a beatdown just before you bayonet him in the stomach. Then you see the best part -- watching your victim try to stuff his intestines back into his body as the light goes out of his eyes."

Snapping fingers. Waving hands in front of her face. Finally shaking.

"Welcome back."

(a quick peek into the future)
"This is Colonel Bennett, commander of Christine's Cougars. You are looking for Governor Bradford? He is right here. I am holding him by his scrawny neck. Should I release -- or squeeze?"
