Reversing the mailing list schism

BMonnery

SOC-13
Hi, I've sent this to the lists I'm on, and hopefully some of the "other lists" members are here and can forward this:

Hello,

I've been looking at the various list stats, we're all
far less active than we were, and this schisming has
done no-one any favours.

Since it now seems fairly certain 3rd edition is about
18 months away, and with the reprints on their way, I
propose you transfer *all* list memberships en masse
to a new, unified, unmoderated group.

Do I have a second?

I must have left the list before the schism happened, what was it about(1)?

Well, things got pretty nasty onlist over a lot of trivial stuff. Most KevinC butting heads with others over whether stuff is "canon" or not. Eventually, he started censoring posts he didn't like (i.e. mine, amongst others) and Ed Lipsett upped and left, setting up http://groups.yahoo.com/group/2300noncanon/ and taking the talent with him (apparently). Myself and other are now permanently barred from Kevins mailing list.

The answer quite simply is no, Kevin won't even talk about it, which is disappointing. He's become too entrenched. There will never again be a united 2300AD mailing list by the look of things.

Traveller (and 2300) have been a bigger part of my life than just about any commercially available activity. But it's an, ahem, f-ing role playing game, for &(*!#$'s sake.

On the whole, and deliberately side-stepping any of the issues that various parties had with each other, I think the current set-up actually works rather well. Loosely 2300AD inspired ideas (which usually have a much better grounding in current science) on the Non-Canon list, stuff that is pretty nearly plug and play with all GDW 2300. The Non-canon list is more open and free wheeling (if you want to see an idea booted about irrespective of how far from 2300 you end, its ideal), whilst the 2300 list sticks as close as possible to the established rules and continuity framework of the publishaed material.

the only real problem is that this perfectly reasonable solution to a minor disagreement was only reached after a lot of nonsense and silliness. But that's the internet for you...

Cheers,

Nick Middleton

Bryn -

I'm sorry about how things turned out but I'm afraid that I don't agree with your version of events. Please can we not resurrect this dispute further. Both lists seem quite happy at the moment, and we already have a third outlet with these forums.

Really? I'd be interested as to what you thought happened? (Personally, I simply reacted to banning)

Gentlemen,

Sadly, we've already seen this spill over onto the 'sfconsim-1' Yahoo group. I don't know the particulars and I don't want to know the particulars. I also don't want to read about it.

Could the matter just be dropped? Please?

Sincerely,
Larsen

No, but you have a dissenting vote...

Leave the Frontiersmen on the frontiers, I say. Why settle just one planet?
