RNA memory implants...

Good afternoon, All,

Out of curiosity, how long do RNA memory implants work? Or are they permanent? And how do you tell the difference in the number of ranks contained in an RNA memory implant? Is there a cost difference between a Forgery implant that grants one skill rank and one that grants five ranks?

I'm not sure about canon sources (if any exist), but I remember reading a Star Trek story that had these. Dr. McCoy took an RNA course in the Vulcan language in the book Spock's World. Said it made him spend a week in the fresher. Also said it would allow him to use the language to full effect, but would fade over time with non-use. Just like any other skill, I guess. I would think the cost would be different for different ranks. How would you handle this in game terms? Buying skills in-game would seem to unbalance things to me. But then, I guess it's no different than buying powered armor that augments your strength, dexterity, etc...

One would also have to take into consideration the Tech Level the RNA Memory Implant was created at. If you get one at TL12, would it be any worse than on at TL15 (or at whatever TL they are created at)?

it seems that you can get one Implant a year so it might wearoff in a year
cost is listed at 3-10 KCr
so cost might be something like rank * 2 or so

last tel #ranks months from the end of the year then lose 1 rank a month and at end of year have no ranks left and can get a new implant ?

A--they are permanent, if successfully implanted.

B--On this, a liscensed Dr who administers these should be able to do so with a DC of 10 or 15. As these are TL-12 thru 15 in nature, allow the Dr's Homeworld TL be a modifier to his role to identify this. If an NPC Dr, assume minimum TL-12 background for his Med. degree.

C--Using the 3-10kcr an injection given to us, and the language of the data on pages 218-219 for singular injections safely delivered in a year into the sophont, I would use the number of skill ranks of the injections as a multiplier to the cost. 3-10 is roll of 1d8, times Five in this case. Say GM rolled a 4, then 20kcr becomes the cost on that particular world for that particular injection of 5 ranks.

Now as to costs for collegiate/ technical school degrees, those prices found in THB should be used.
