CT Only: Rolling Skills, how do you read this?

Now, normally, you get 2 skills on your first term, and 1 per term after that, then +1 per commission and +1 per promotion.

However:
The scout service is an exception to the normal eligibilities. Because the service has no rank or promotion, scout characters do not become eligible for extra skills during their careers. Instead, however, scouts receive two skills for each term of service, including the first.

Do you focus on the Scout portion of this or the because reason to this?

If you follow the Because then you can justify any profession in Book 1 and Supplement 4 getting 2 skill rolls per term even though it's not called out specifically.

How do y'all do it?

I always read it that only the Scouts got two rolls per term of service, and the rest had to go with the commission and promotion skill rolls. I think that I figured that the Other profession also should get two skills rolls per term of service as well.

I think the way we used to play it was any profession (be it Book1 or Supplement 4) that did not have ranks received 2 skill rolls per term.

But Supplement 4 doesn't mention this at all, and in Book 1 it only calls out Scouts. So I'm thinking that perhaps actual Canon rules are that Scouts are the only non-rank profession that receive 2 skills per term and all the others only get 1.

That would be a perfectly legitimate interpretation of the rules in Book 1.

That's correct.

Another thing about Supplement 4 that will blow your mind. With Book 1 careers, characters in all those careers get all of the weapons basic weapons as default skills (skill-0).

With Supplement 4, this is not so. Characters do not get the default skills. They only have skill in the weapons that they obtain skill levels. Other skills without skill levels are subject to the non-proficiency rule.

Not quite, go and read it again ;) {No disrespect meant and humorous smilie to indicate playful banter between friends, I do consider S4 a friend on these boards, I'm sure he'll tell me if I'm in error}

CT:S4 uses the old skill half rather than skill 0 for default skills and it states that all characters get all weapon skills at skill half with the exception of barbarians, doctors and a couple of others.

CT:S4 was released pre-revised '81 edition that gave the Scouts 2 skills per term.

By MT the rule was that careers with nor position or promotion roll get 2 skills per term just like Scouts post '81.

So IMHO the 2 skills per term allocation should apply to Other in the core rules and all the careers in CT:S4 that do not get position and promotion.

I've always done it as any non-commissioning service gets the second roll per term. As did my ref before I became a ref.

Absolutely! If I'm wrong, brother, then I'd rather you enlighten me than let me go on believing something that is not correct!

It was the Barbarians, Doctors, and Bureaucrats that I was thinking of. Those careers don't get the default weapons.

I remember saying, "Wow! Look at that!" but I haven't read S4 in a long time. My memory washed over those three careers and applied it to all careers in the supplement.

Thanks for the clarification.

Still, it's a kick in the pants, eh?
