RPG Suite

I'm actually more interesting in the RPGSuite application they are talking about. That looks promising, especially the ship architect and digital character sheet. The character generation, well, part of the fun of that is doing it by hand, but it could be great for making NPCs.

This is fantastic, I want it. http://www.rpgsuite.com

I figured it deserves its own thread. I can't wait to trade starships.

I'm just curious about how much the apps will cost and how they will work.

For instance, will they be free apps but limited to only what is outlined int he SRD? And if you want to build characters or ships that use info from the Core Rulebook you have to pay extra? And the same if you want to make characters using Mercenary rules or ships with High Guard rules? Or will you have to pay up front for all that? And how much would it cost?

But yeah, the concept sounds really cool. I hope they do a good job!

It's obvious they're exceeding the SRD with a character generator - NONE of the corebook careers are open content, not even the samples in the SRD.

Indeed, there'd have to be a licensing agreement and a cost, this would far exceed any fair use limits otherwise.

Some hot air speculation: a Steam-like software model could work, something with built-in DRM and a reasonable access policy that supports an open trade of user-generated materials, like some of the bigger CRPGs. I would definitely want to be able to trade ship designs and even ship component designs.

And no, I don't mean to start a DRM sidetracked thread here.

I know that what they show is way more than the SRD which is why I am curious how they will handle it. What they show may be the "full" or "deluxe" version and that you have to pay for, but the "free" version would only support what is outlined in the SRD.

I mean if the character creator let you select create characters using the rules that are in all the books that is A LOT of content that would be included in that app. Granted, it wouldn't include all the "flavor" text and stuff of the books, but still.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. I'm very excited about the idea of the apps though. Very excited. :)

The character generator is, simply by existing, exceeding the SRD. Technically, there are no careers in the SRD. The samples in the dev kit are exemplars that aren't actually part of the SRD they are in.
You cannot do an SRD based Character Generator unless it's just the points system, or includes only 3rd party careers.

So, either they're looking to get a takedown, a lawsuit, or a license from Mongoose... if they haven't secured one or more of them already.

I think they're good, it's a Mongoose Publishing post on Facebook with the link "Software for Traveller on the horizon..."
