First... an error in Fighting Ships:
The Chrysanthemum class destroyer on page 14 is listed as having five triple sandcaster turrets organized into five batteries.
On the USP rating, this is recorded as 5/5-- five batteries each with rating 5.
The ship is TL 15, so it gets a +2 bonus for sandcaster ratings.
A triple turret has three sandcasters... so looking up "3" on the High Guard design chart on page 25 of Book 5... that's a base of 2. 2 + 2 is 4.
So the ship should have a sandcaster rating of 4 for each of its five batteries.
(The destroyer on page 16 and the light cruiser on page 28 have correct ratings. I didn't check the others.)
Now... the more sandcasters you have in your battery, the better (higher) your rating....
The table in the combat rules on page 45 of Book 5 is from the attacker's perspective. He must role the number or higher in order to penetrate. Energy weapons have a DM of +2 and the computer difference will shift it as well.
Right... so the stronger the battery and/or the weaker the missile attack, the harder it is to penetrate.
Got it.
