Sci-Fi20 question

Hunter, I dont suppose youd be willing to adopt the SW saga system for skills and talents for Sci-Fi 20 would you?

ps, thankyouthankyouthankyou, with an impending loss of the T20 licence and Mongooses dropping of Starship Troopers I was worried I was going to lose my d20 Sci-Fi fix.

The system I am working on is somewhat similar to the saga system for skills, though it is definitely not the same system. I've got a rough first draft of the base mechanic and character generation system posted in the Moot right now ;)

Thanks! We've still got a few years left to run with Traveller, but this will let us carry on beyond the end of that license with our own IP. The system is intended to be a sci-fi toolkit for use in just about any setting, though we will be producing our own in-house setting (well at least one...)

My main goals with SciFi20 are to get back to playing the game and dumping a lot of the rules bloat. Particularly with regard to character generation. Something you can sit down and play within 15 minutes of reading the basic rules.

that's good to hear. I'll be looking forward to this.

computer programs or just simplification ? (or both ?)

Very pleased to hear this. I'd be interested in a generic SF toolkit for d20 (which was largely what T20 was).

You also have the advantage now of having the d20 Future SRD available (which wasn't around when T20 was published). A whole new game can also keep abreast of current developments in the d20 System such as Spycraft 2.0, True20, Star Wars Saga Edition and 4e.

Anyway, great to hear and I look forward to the finished product.

What kind of ideas from D20 Future were you thinking?

In particular, I was thinking about terminology and subsystems that may have to be replaced if they are considered to have been licensed from Traveller. For example, Traveller Tech Levels and the planet and starship generation sequences. D20F adopted Progress Levels from Alternity which are pretty much borrowed from Traveller.

I would also recommend Blood & Space from RPGObjects which has a good starship design system.

Fortunately, with the exception of world generation, the design systems while able to replicate the results of earlier Traveller systems are not the same systems. They were rebuilt from the ground up and are owned by me. World generation needed major work anyway so dumping it in favor of a more modern system is a good thing.

Tech Levels, well they simply ran from 1-20 in Traveller and were tied to specific eras in Earth's history. I'd see something more along the lines of Stone Age, Metal Age, Age of Exploration, Industrial Age, Information Age, etc...

SciFi20 is basically a streamlining and update to T20, without the Traveller name. So both? :smirk:
Since 75% of the playtest guidebook was devoted to classes, feats and skills, plus a cleaner written version of the Chargen rules from T20, and you are rewriting the Chargen rules, how can it be both?

More along the lines of streamlining chargen than rewriting IMO. There is a lot we could pull from the guidebook into SciFi20. I honestly haven't made a decision on what to do with it yet, but likely it will see the light of day before too long in one form or another.

What has been put forth so far in the moot shows the potential of taking the system in non-traveller directions.

What about FTL drives? I would like to see some semblance of warp drive, although I understand the metagame reasons for the way its done in Traveller. (Forces choke points and makes adventuring more viable. No jetting from one end of the galaxy to the other with no chance of being spotted). While quantum tunneling may have been the only option back when Traveller first came out, research has changed that over the last decade or so. (See works of Miguel Alquiberra, Matt Visser, et.al)
