Sci-Fi20 question

What about FTL drives? I would like to see some semblance of warp drive, although I understand the metagame reasons for the way its done in Traveller. (Forces choke points and makes adventuring more viable. No jetting from one end of the galaxy to the other with no chance of being spotted). While quantum tunneling may have been the only option back when Traveller first came out, research has changed that over the last decade or so. (See works of Miguel Alquiberra, Matt Visser, et.al)

Actually depending on what version of Trek you are looking at Jump Drives are faster than warp.

Warp style drive will certainly be one of the FTL options available for campaigns.

If memory serves me correctly, the speed someons is traveling at warp speed is represented in the following formula:
TS= C*WF^3 with TS meaning "Traveling Speed", C meaning the speed of light and WF^3 meaning the Warp Factor number cubed. Which mean Warp Factor 2 is 8 times the speed of light; Warp Factor 3 is 27 times the speed of light, Warp Factor 4 is 64 times the speed of light, et cetera. At least that's what my Star Trek Technical Manual states! ;)

Kevin: that's one of several versions out there.

Specifically, there are several different formulae in common enough use to matter for Trek Warp Factors
TOS & SFTM: Vc=C*Wf3
Fandom TNG: Vc=C*Wf4
TNGTM: Vc=Wf(3.3+((-log10(10-Wf)+1)*(-log10(10-Wf)/2)*0.2))
GURPS:prime Directive has a fourth, for which a formula was used but not released.

Starships and Spacemen uses WF=Hexes per day... and 1ly hexes...
