Scout/Courier S-AA22 Serpent MCr47.6

Using a 100-ton, TL14 hull, the Serpent Class Scout/Courier mounts jump drive-A, maneuver drive-A, and power plant-A, giving a performance of jump-2 and 2G acceleration. Fuel tankage supports a 2 parsec jump, at 9t per parsec, and 2 months of operations. Attached to the bridge is a Computer Model/2bis std. There are 4 staterooms and no low berths. A hybrid triple turret is installed. Cargo capacity is 12 tons. The ship has an airframe hull, with scoops and bins for frontier refueling. The ship carries 1 Enclosed Air/Raft.

Crew comfort: +0

4 Dt per person was Comfort +0 in T5.09.
In T5.10 it's Comfort +4.

Drives can't be smaller than a standard drive A, so a Mod drive can't be smaller hence cheaper than a standard drive A. Still uses less fuel though.

No drive may be smaller than the Drive-A of the class, even after modifications like Stage Effects.

Yes, T5 is rather complicated when stage effects are involved...

Good catch!

4 Dt per person was Comfort +0 in T5.09.
In T5.10 it's Comfort +4.

C = [quarters + commons tonnage] / number of crew.

T5.10 BBB p316.

I think that hasn't changed. Right??

Ahhhhh... 17 tons / 4 crew = +4. I see what you mean. I wonder what my program is doing... oh you're saying it used to have a subtraction in there in T5.09. Ah very possible.

I don't understand the costs of the sensors?

Stage effect is only applied to the sensor, not the mount.
Range effect is only applied to the mount, not the sensor.

Yes, the effects are as they are, because the sensor has no volume, and the mount has no TL.

Lessee... a Neutrino Detector ("N") is TL 10, S=7, MCr 1.
A Surface N stays the same. "Mount" is zero tons.
DS increases TL by +2, tons x3, cost x5.
So that should be TL 12, 0 tons, S=12, and MCr 5.

The multiplier changed. I guess my software really does need to be updated.

Mail vault is Sophisticated Payload (B2, p89), cost is MCr 1 per Dt.

Hey, you're right. I'm glad that got sorted. It's not even in the T5.10 BBB.

Aha! The "Surface" mount used to MCr 0.5. (And "Extendable" used to MCr 1.5).

I'll update the entry in the configuration file.

I also note that, while my config file actually has drive minimum tons, it doesn't appear to enforce them. That's a shame... it means I really should rewrite my application.

****

OH.

Now I see... NONE of the Range Effects are applied to the sensor component. And NONE of the Stage Effects are applied to the mount component. I simply built them "single spreadsheet" fashion, as line items as it were.

Yeah, have to rewrite my app.

re Sensors. You're right.

And I have to rewrite my app.

Starting with T5 Book 2 p67:

1. Start with the sensor.
2. Apply Stage Effects.

= This means Stage Effects do not affect the Mount.

3. Then apply the mount.
4. Then Modify "Sensors" based on Range. This actually means MOUNT.

Page 81 has the clarification in the Range Effects table:

"Applies to Mount".

Quite, T5 is not always obvious, and there are subtle differences between versions.

Sensor calculations are specified more clearly on B2 p137 under "How Sensors Work".

I agree we have to encode the rules in our software. Without my spreadsheet I wouldn't remember half the rules.

Cleverly, I put a lot of data in portable configuration files, to prevent the need for re-compilation. That has helped me a number of times. It also lets users add and tweak a lot of the data to suit specialty needs.

I even store the computation for hull cost in a configuration. Because I figured THAT might easily change.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of computation that's baked into the code itself. That includes Crew Comfort and building Components such as Sensors and Weapons.

And... it's in a language that no longer is supported. So, I have to start over, probably with REST microservices.

Happens to us all... I started with Apple ][ Basic, then used HyperCard for a while, both long gone.

Even Excel 1 spreadsheets seems to be unusable now.

What language was that?

Using these specifications I get:

Using a 100 Dton streamlined hull, it has a J Drive A, a M Drive A, and a P Plant A giving performance of jump-2 and 2 g acceleration. There is fuel tankage of 21,6 Dton, enough for 8 weeks and 1 jump-2.
Controls consists of three control consoles, six operating consoles, and a m/2/bis computer with Ergonomics 2.
There are four sensors: a neutrino sensor, an EMS, a communicator, and a scope.
Crew accomodations consists of four staterooms with a Comfort of 4.
There is a weapon: a triple SLM hybrid turret.
There is a carried craft: an Air/raft in an interior/hold.
Cargo capacity is 6 Dton. The ship requires a crew of three: a pilot, an astrogator, and an engineer. The ship costs MCr 63,36.
