Ship Chart

Andrew,

Another superb piece of art, thank you so much for that!

I just love size comparison charts like this and for more than the usual reasons.

Take a look at this. It's the Hayden Sphere in the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. During one of the TML Real Space get-togethers, we visited the planetarium and enjoyed a private tour thanks to Rob Davenport. After goggling at the Sphere, we calculated it's volume with the help of Jeff Zeitlin's then rare PDA/cell phone.

It turns out that the Sphere is just about the same size as a Broadsword-class mercenary cruiser minus the four landing legs.

So, look at Andrew's wonderful poster and then look at a picture of the Hayden Sphere. You then should be able to "grok" the "real" sizes of the other starships Andrew depicted.

Regards,
Bill

Awesome renderings but that Scout/Courier looks awful big compared to the Beowulf and Marava. Same with the X-boat compared to the tender.

The Hull Configuration of the Type S demands a longer Keel to allow for the Hull to contain the Volume than would a blunter wedge like you see with the Type A.

I second the "awesome renderings" but share the surprise at some of the apparent sizes. The subsidized liner looks bigger than the X-boat Tender. The launch on the lab ship looks nearly as large as the 200 ton Traders.

It's a damn fine looking comparison chart, but it doesn't look like the ships are drawn to scale.

For example, the 100 ton scout seems to be as big a the 200 ton Free Trader.

A wedge with the same length width and height as a box is 1/2 the volume, so what is drawn is about right for what you would see from the side.

I *hope* they're correct! (Actually, the Lab is a tiny bit over, and the Broadsword is well over, but AFAIK the rest are okay).

Look at this pic:

The first column shows the side of three objects, each 3m x 1m. They're the same, right?

Now look at them from the top:

a cuboid, 3m x 1m x 2m, volume 6m3
a cylinder, 3m x 1m, volume 2.36m3
a prism, 3m x 1m x 2m, volume 3m3

The third column shows how long they'd have to be to have the same volume.

Overhead views would prove enlightening of course - we'd be able to see that the Flat (yes, Flat) Trader is significantly rounder than, say, the Beowulf or Marava, etc etc.

Very Nice!

I have to ask though are there write ups and deck plans for the Spirit of Sirius and the white & red ship in the upper right of that chart? I would be interested in seeing those if you have them available.

The ship in the upper right is the 800t Exploratory Trader, also known as "Flat Trader" or "Spice Trader". There are, I believe, CT, MT, and T5 stats available for it.
