COMMENTS
You can find ships like the Tiggi class at virtually any starport in charted space. The design is representative of the many types of utility freighter that serve most worlds. While massive bulk carriers displacing tens of kilotonnes may carry more freight, the humble utility freighter is far more flexible. So while the huge bulk carriers are restricted to serving major trade routes between high population worlds, utility freighters can be found servicing most civilised worlds and probably represents the average citizen's idea of a "standard" merchant ship.
The actual design of the Tiggi class originated from an Imperial navy specification during the Pacification Campaigns. Intended as an economical freighter to meet the growing needs of interstellar trade within the young Imperium, the Tiggi proved to be a huge success and has been in production for almost nine hundred years. Built by countless Imperial and non-Imperial yards, one can find a Tiggi on any world touched by even the most minor trade route.
The class is typical of most utility freighters. It concentrates on carrying cargo and has only limited facilities for passengers (most people prefer to take passage on dedicated liners). Its military heritage is evident in its comparatively heavy armament, making it ideal for frontier regions were piracy might be a real threat. The class is still popular with many navies, and a lively trade in naval surplus vessels exists, bringing the class within the reach of many fledgling lines that might not otherwise be able to afford them.
