Solo Traveller

Back when CT was just T one of the big appeals was being able to play solitaire Traveller. I was wondering if anyone was very successful at this? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to play by yourself using the CT rules?

I think the term was used more to describe such activities as generating characters, planets or subsectors and building ships either in between or in lieu of actual gaming.

In JTAS #13 there's an article on 'Real Time Traveller' that actually means playing solo-Traveller in real-time and keeping a log.

I find the best way to "Solo" an RPG is write stories. It allows you the ability to be creative and think through a character while not allowing the game to become Dice Rolls only.

I've started a solo game, and have begun detailing it in my blog. I've just acquired Traveller: Universe, so I expect to have decent maps relatively shortly to share with others.

I don't know about you guys but I was always told that playing with yourself was bad. Probably something to do with socialisation.

Just to further that stereotype: I do work in my basement. By myself. In front of a computer all day. For a company 600 miles away.

But to break that stereotype, I also run [did a 10K last weekend], bike [with the occassional duathlon] and go to the gym pretty much daily. And wonder of wonders, I'm married & have a 7 year old I'm hoping to show the wonders of gaming to.

But at the moment, solo-play is all I have time for. And I'm thinking of starting that up again to flesh out some worlds in the event I ever do get to play again. Just think: I'll have time to create the starport authority people I interact with, give them some personality. Then whenever I have a group of players at that starport, I'll have a good handle on NPC behaviours. Maybe some mapping, basic referee stuff but created in play.

Yeah, that's it: it's not playing with myself, it's referee prep-work!

(and now back to my computer for work...by myself...in the basement... :))

I did solo Traveller for a long while in the late 90's, [Based on the JTAS article] because I couldn't find people to play "That game where the Referee sits around all night, rolling planets by himself."

Yet, my game is still around, and those gamers are all gone from the college.

Great fun, led to lots and lots of characters, worlds and adventures.

Essentially, for me, it was a process of discovering my MTU, one world at a time, by having characters undertake adventures on each one, as I went, rather than just rolling up some stuff and launching it.

So that each place became unique, and with the time invested, over time, it has great depth and history, that you aren't going to get from rolling up 6 UPPs, over a single week, and then jumping in...

..Until you, and your players have adventured for some months.

It does help to have a creative writing bent, though. Somewhat of a mental
ventriloquism doesn't hurt, either.

Pocket Empires, same deal, pretty much.

I like a lot of background detail.

Merxiless - I'm like you; I want lots of background details.

I've got a merchant captain that I want to play some more, as his crew continues trading and building up their company. But as a result of his adventures, I just know there's a scout and scout ship that will need to explore, as well as a mercenary ticket that'll need to be filled. I suspect I will be rolling up some new characters to do these things, once I get a chance.

Dumb question time: which JTAS article?

(runs off to comb through his collection - then remembers he bought the CR-ROM)

Where can I get a copy of the Traveller: Universe software. I went to the BITS site and they seem to no longer carry it.

Well normally it is listed at

http://stores.ebay.com/Ancient-Tomes

However Andy has been real busy lately with life, work, and a recent convention. I would keep an eye on the ebay store (that is their main storefront now) for an update of product listings. Due to all that has been on his plate, he may not have had the chance re-list items yet. They usually do "Buy It Now" so you don't have to worry about going thru the bidding process.

The main BITS Universe Info site is here,

If nothing new gets listed in the next few days you may drop him a note thru the AncientTomes ebay site or via the email addy on the BITS website at,

http://www.bitsuk.net/

(oddly enough I can't seem to pull that page up today. They may just be working on updating the site - it has been a bit behind.)

There was a listing for universe up as of three days ago, gone now. I have been trying to decide whether to buy it or not, because I am seeking a few specific features.

I emailed ancient tomes a day or so ago. No response yet, but they report it takes up to three days to get email comms established, so I am waiting.
