Soti

A long time ago, I used to publish a State of the Imperium Address (SOTI) on behalf of QLI. I parted company with QLI in 2005, so maybe it's been that long since I did one. And in any case this is about me, not QLI. But I liked the title so let's run with it...

Me (MJD) in 2012... interesting year. I'm typing with damaged and possibly broken fingers due to an experiment into bowie knife fitghting last night. Historical Fencing has been a major focus for me in the past year (and earlier too).

I attended SWASH and the Smallsword Symposium, where I shot the button off an opponent's jacket during the first Bloodless Duelling contest for a century. Went out to a double defeat; I saw my ball hit but at the same time I was watching the opponent's in flight. Hit in the temple, I'd probably have been buried in a sponge.

I got certified as a Historical Fencing instructor in July, scoring 100% for my epic military sabre lesson. This was just a few months after being appointed Director of Coaching for ASMAA but different organisations have different qualifications.

Also in July, I was back in California filming season 2 of Triggers: Weapons that Changed the World, and since then I've been hired as a technical consultant for another show.

Several new books this year, including one on snipers, a couple of weapons books and a self-defence/personal combat title that goes into design in a few days. I'm also working on a big history book that wil be delivered next week.

On the Traveller front, Avenger has published some new stuff including the Kitbag series. We have quite a few products stacked up ready to go out once layout has finished with them. I'm also involved with another Traveller related product for a different publisher. All will become clear on that front sometime in 2013. Until then I can't say any more.

I did some writing for Mancave Playbabes magazine (yes, really). I'll still be involved when the magazine relaunches in the spring, but as yet I'm not sure how much involvement I'll have.

In the coming months I expect to be running a series of seminars launching the ASMAA instuctor-certification programme, and taking a greater role in delivering ASMAA seminars as well as providing self-defence instruction to kickboxing clubs that compete in WTKA.

We'll not be active on the convention circuit though. Well, not me and those immediately associated with me. We normally do Conpulsion in Edinburgh but this year it clashes with another event that prevents the Avenger team from being represented. Might do an event later in the year but the schedule is already filling up and there's a possibility of more trips to California. Similarly, the Newcastle Whisky Festival clashes with SWASH, so we had to pick one. Whisky or swords?? Hmm. Well, SWASH has a bar....

There's probably a whole lot of other stuff, but that'll do for now. I need to get back to writing the last 16,000 words of my book before New Year's Eve....
