Space Barbarians!!

Sir Brad

SOC-13
Due to our GM of alternative weekend games being a MT fan who gets anal sometimes about stuff like Homeworld Generation, we are currently stuck with some Space Barbarians, myself and one other player generated Homeworlds in the same descriptor range (medium size, standard atmo, wet, mid law, E class starport, Pre-Industrial tech) five of us where hitting verious books (Sup 3, Keepers of the Flame, Imperial Encyclopedia, Imperial Atlas ect) looking for a world that fit that discriptor and not for lack of trying the only one we could find at the time was Rorre, now we are meant to be Imperials but we couldn't find a world that had a two thirds or better match so we ended up as being Impies in Exile. Pre-Industrial kind of limits your Career Choices (Other, Sailor, Barbarian, Hunter or if you have the Soc Noble) I got lucky and rolled ACAA8C so I skipped the whole Enlistment thing and opted for Noble after Rocking the 1st term I failed to reenlist and ended up ACAA8D and with a Skill list that kind of looks like Book 1 Space Navy (just ignore the Leader and Hunting Skills).

the other player with a Rorre homeworlded character got her wish to play a Barbarian, she also rocked the first term and failed to reenlist.

the other two players went through five characters in the first adventure so I'll refer to them but am unlikely to post the full stats of the deceased.

Noble combat rifleman/hunter from a black powder world! That one's going to be interesting. You're used to handling gunpowder, opens up some options that wouldn't be available to folk accustomed to dealing with it safely closed away in metal cartridges.

"What's that doohicky for?"

"It's for reloading spent cartirdges with new powder and bullets."

"No seriously, what's it for?"

as I pointed out to the GM If I can access and buy a Starship I should be able to get my hands on Modern Firearms, best he's let me do is a TL-4 Bolt Action Rifle, a TL-4 Bolt Action Big Game Rifle and a TL-4 Revolver.

the Joe Commandos that we tangled with in the first adventure found that Ballistic Cloth is only little better than being nude against 0.460 Magnum Rifles, the three round Magazine was a bit of a drawback until we looted some Joes for their ACR's and where able to go full Rock N' Roll with the 9mm Slug. although we where able to salvage a few hundred rounds each from the Joes CP we are going to have to be careful with using the ACR's, I've still got close to a thousand 0.460 Mag and a even thousand .303.

Why would I want to use a Musket that "Fires as a Carbine" when I can get a gun that fires as a Rifle +2 on the Armor Matrix and +1 at medium or longer on the Range Matrix and dose 4D damage?

...

What, no Sears catalog? What has this universe come to?

If the gamemaster's letting him buy TL4 weaponry, he's past musketry and into smokeless powder and breech-loaded metal cartidges with built-in primers - which he's probably finding to be quite a relief.

Sifu strolls in...

Inserting pre-industrial characters into the spacefaring community can be a challenge. To see how I made one fit in the 'modern' world, peek at this thread...

Darn it, I'm having a senior moment. Can't remember how to link, so I will cut and paste instead...

This character was created by a Marine friend of mine when I was deployed on the USS Midway, CV-41, in 1982. I almost forgot all my TRAVELLER gear, but managed to grab Book 1, Supplement 4, a few maps from old games and an issue of JTAS. That was it for six months of gaming on the high seas!

I had created a convoluted plot involving renegade Zhodani, hitek subterfuge and space battles, but he wasn't interested. My friend had leafed through Supp. 4 and wanted to play something different. Being a Barbarian was perfect for him -- you should have seen his eyes light up.

I racked my brain trying to think of some way to get a barbarian into space, and stumbled on the idea of an automated sample return vehicle capturing him. His character was injected with various drugs to cure minor aliments, then a medical slow drug. When he woke up, he thought he was in the land of the dead!

He became permanently attached to the Fleet Captain and was his unpaid personal bodyguard. If someone was in my way, I had my character whistle, point, and say "ATTACK!" Blood flowed shortly thereafter.

The last time I saw him, he had rescued a noblewoman from repeated mind assaults by the renegade Zho and she adopted him as a personal pet of sorts. The last image of him was as he picked up the woman and carried her off, presumably to the bedroom.

Clancy is the rare exception to typical barbarians. He is not in awe or scared of hitek items, he just doesn't care. His homeworld is a former outpost of the Engineers, who control technology that Terrans, despite being at TL13, will not duplicate for over a hundred years.

Our NPC Engineer is a one term "Enlisted" Barbarian with Mechanics -1 and Engineering - 0 (just started his post career personal development), as long as we don't spin up our J-Drive we only need one Engineer, but I don't think a primitive with the Workshop Manual and "Atomic Power For Dummies" will cut the mustard for long. so far we have just bean flying from place to place, doing some CAS on Infantry CP's and Boat landing fields.

our other PC's include a Barbarian Warrior/Psion, apart from repelling boarders she is useless on a ship.

a Darrian Pre-Industrial enlisted Sailor she's out Navigator & Opp's officer (got Coms - 1, Electronics - 1 and Aircraft in her first term) clearly she was in the Wet-Navy Ballooning & Glider Corps but got seconded to the Rore SDB Squadron at some point she has Navigation - 0

visiting from the 3I are our Medic, in fact a Bio-Medical Researcher also with degrees in Electronics & Physics. (we suspect a Psionics Researcher)

and our most recreant (PC) addition an Imperial Diplomat, long on Etiquette and Negotiation skills (Liaison 3 or 4), the rest of the time, well just let me say Mamaires & Male Bovines. I'm more interested in conducting "Relations" with his PA/Driver than hear him prattle on about how if I return to the 3I I can drop the "In-Exile" from one of the titles I don't use, something about some distant relatives soon to be removed from the old family title, apparently my character and his father are the strongest claimants.

let me tell you about our uniforms, Snug fitting Black Leather (Olive Drab shirts for ground forces, Blue for Maritime and Black for Space) and Field Service Caps or Brodie Helmets (older personal can still choose to ware Forage caps in their service color, unofficially these caps are popular with legacey personal as well), unless the environment or camouflage requirements dictate otherwise, Jack Armor in effect, Assault Jackets are less snug fitting and include "Prof Plates" worked in to them, Insignia and fasteners are in brass.

also our Vacc-Suits look like some kind of Pulp era/Diesel Punk contraption.
