Starship ammo loadouts.......

Starflyer

SOC-11
I've just been going over MGT Fighting Ships, Sector Fleet and High Guard with plans to create a naval based campaign.......however I just noticed the missile capacity of the Gionetti class cruiser as being 18,000 missiles and only 1500t and then started noticing the same on other large warships.

Surely there's something wrong with both the weights but also why such a huge capacity?

Anyone have a reasonable explanation I can use.

Thanks

Loadout

MGT rules are the missile turret/bay ammo is stored at 12 missiles/Td. So 1500 tons would be 18,000 missiles.

Missile banks fire 12 missiles per ship turn, large missile bank bays fire 24 missiles per turn, and turrets fire one - three per turn. In play, I find that a ship can unload those missiles and empty their stores a LOT faster than one would initially think.

It's the quantity that gets me most. Who's producing all these missiles, the space required to stow them all etc.,

These missiles approximate 83kg if there's 18000 in just 1500DWT. I can't help but think the math wasn't considered when the weights were set. IIRC a modern AAM Sidewinder is around 85kg and I imagine that does not have the propellant or warhead to make much of an impact on a starship at space ranges.

12 missiles per dton puts one at about 1,100 liters per. That's not overly small. The sidewinder would cube a lot less, maybe 200 liters with shipping. It is almost 3m long, though- surprised me.
