FLASH-CLASS SYSTEM DEFENSE BOAT

The range of possible system defense boats is large, if not actually infinite. This boat is typical 200dt model, armored and equipped with both missile and laser weaponry. Its function is to operate within a star system and defend it from invading forces. SDBs can be used in space combat against starships, or they may be pressed into service as air and orbital superiority craft in operations against ground forces.

This painting was drawn in reference to a work painted by Paul Jaquays in 1981.
The original work was published in pp.25 at CT Supplement 9 Fighting Ships.

magmagmag, did you come up with the class name for this boat? I remember this ship from Supplement 9 but I do not recall it being called the Flash.

I only ask because I am working on an SDB book and am incorporating as much as I can from previously published work, including posts here on the forum. I want to credit the class name where it is due.

And as an aside, I echo the comments of others about your work. I love the attention to detail.

A usual you hae taken a ship that I have always considered boring or somewhat ugly and made it really cool.

Me too. I searched the published class name and found it Traveller wiki, Imperial Encyclopedia. Am I wrong?

Crews and a marine-boarding team have paid tribute to the arrival of their new captain. Droids continue to load supplies. As soon as the refueling is complete, the SDB will sortie to the patrol.

System defense boats have no jump drives and are incapable of interstellar flight. To enable the transfer of these gunboats to systems in need of them, a jump shuttle has been produced which carries fuel and jump drives for such transfers. One jump shuttle is provided for each ten system defense boats, in situations where interstellar capability is required.

The Imperial Transportation Command adopts a lot of private standard container ships
as military transport ships. The 400dt private standard container ships which is able to
transport a 200dt standard container rack. The 200dt SDBs is equipped with a connection mechanism similar to this standard container rack. During the war, the Imperial Navy is able to recruit large quantities of private 400dt transports and deploy SDBs where they needed them, in addition to their own military transport ships.

When mated, the two ships have access ways to allow intermingling of the crews of each ship. The primary problem with such connections is that a period of several hours is necessary to connect or disconnect the ship; the transport ship is not an ideal way to transfer SDBs to a system where there is action currently going on.

The best aspect of these renders by @magmagmag is that they don't look like submarines in space anymore.
They look like actual spacecraft instead.
