Actually, it was somewhat popular... its just that the writers, directors, producers, cast, etc all knew nothing about science, space, or spacecraft and had no desire to learn!
According to the book "The Making of Star Trek", Roddenberry first pitched Star Trek to CBS, but they declined because "they already had a space show" (Lost in Space)
Both Star Trek and Lost in Space ran 3 seasons....but there are likely a few CBS execs who lived to regret their decision!
