trader jim

SOC-14 1K
I need a survial kit for my troops - TRADER RAIDERS- what should i include in it??

You "Hit" the problem right on the head!! I NEVER could assign a teck level to them. I never wanted to be locked into a tech level....but if im Forced to make a decision, it would be High Anti-Grav and all that covers!!....Some mixed equipment.

Geeez...you got ME to admitt to something!!!

Ok...
A radio/emergency beacon
Survival rations
These not so tasty bars, three of which will keep a human alive for a day. Labeled for morning, midday & evening consuption. They don't taste good for a reason. You don't want people snacking on these things!

A condensing canteen. This device can draw moisture from the from air, filling it's one liter storage compartment in two hours in a standard atmosphere with a standard humidity. It also has a filter system water added in more traditional methods.

Firestarting equipment. Probably some sort of butane torch with a built in flint & steel backup.

A large honking knife. The kind you can chop down small trees with as well as dress a medium sized critter like a deer (insert standard K'kree bar-b-q joke here).

Some sort of simple firearm. Like a AR-7, or a double barreled shotgun with a combination of slug & buckshot rounds.

The troops always need a pair of good boots.

Also, desert clothing

tents, cold weather
Tents, hot weather

Binoculars
EM sensors
other assorted tracking and sensor gear.

Just how big is this kit going to be? With everything mentioned so far, you'd need to add an ATV just to carry it around.
I would guess that they would be issued a general purpose survival kit, then add-ons depending on the environment...

TJ, Maspy is right. You need to specify what level of survival this is for. The SAS have a three level survival gear mentality.
Level One-This is what you have in your rucksack. This includes food, water, shelter, clothing, ammo, mission specific tools, team radio, ammo, medical kit, ammo, special weapons, and ammo.
Level Two-This is what you have in your web gear. This includes one meal, two canteens of water, ammo, knife, compass, mini survival kit, flares, tactical radio, back up weapon. Maybe some other goodies
Level Three-This is what you have when you are dumped in the river, shuck your gear and come up deep in enemy territory. This includes what ever you have concealed in your coat and pant seams, secret buttons (a la OSS). Pocketknife, what ever is in your cargo pockets, bootlaces, dog tags and little else.

Jim, a wilderness survival kit is made to meet the bare minimum requirements to live in the bush. Technology really does`t do much except improve on the existing equipment. There are exceptions, for example the GPS locaters have revolutionized hiking and camping. However, those are sold separately. Any company that manufactures and sells survival kits will automatically assume your going to be ruffing it.
Of course you could take the super tecno survival method.

Hey, check out MY survival kit!
Arrogant Noble siting on his yacht. :D

Any way, here are two of your basic modern day survival kits, with a few additions. This is also a sneak peak at my next toys post, your so privileged. ;)

Deluxe Survival Kit (about the size of a serving platter)

Polished Stainless Steel Box/ Signal Mirror/ Cooking Pot/ Eating Plate/....Well, you get the idea.
Personal Locator Beacon
GPS (if that planet has a GPS sadilight)
Whistle
Flare Gun, with six flares
Flash Light
Tarp
Hypothermia Blanket
Blade
Hatchet
Wire Saw
Whetstone- fine grade
Flint Fire Starter
Waterproof Lighter
Tinder
Button Compass
Fishhooks
Synth Flesh Bandages
Antiseptic Swabs
Plastic Bag 24 x 18 inches
Sugar Packet
Salt and Peper Packets
Sewing Needle - heavy duty point
Nylon Thread
Nylon Mesh Drawstring Bag
Titanium Foil. (A more durable version of aluminum foil. This stuff can be used, and reused, for cooking and food storage.)

Web Coil
A modification to my Web line. This unit produces a thicker more durable strand. The webs from the original Web line launcher will become brittle and turn to dust about an hour after use. Webs produced from the coil will last as long as your typical nylon rope. Rope has unlimited uses, from constructing a shelter to setting snares and hanging your food out the local wildlife`s reach. In other words, you`er going to need a lot of it. The coil has enough web compound to produce thirty meters of line. Notes, the web is strong enough to be used as a bow string but it will only last for eight +1D6 shots. The coil can be adjusted to produce a finer line, better suited for fishing. The coil is equipped with a counter so you`ll know when your running out.

Water Purification Unit
A small metallic cylinder with a color changing indicator light on one end and all the purification stuff on the other. Dip the purifier end in a container of water. If the light end turns green then you don`t need to worry the water is perfectly safe. If it turns red then the water is contaminated and you need to set the purification process. The indicator light will turn blue when it`s working. If the light ever turns black then the water will probably kill you and it is beyond this units ability to clean. Note, be sure to get one that`s calibrated to you race. If you bought one from a K`Kree the light could be green but the water will have you in the fresher for the next two hours.

Viper Unit
Nicknamed after the venomous Terran snake, the Viper is a compact poison detection unit. With a small needle like probe it can tell you if an unknown plant or animal is safe to eat. Note`s, be sure to check the whole thing. Some plants have poisons leaves but the roots are safe to eat. Likewise some animals are delicious and nutritious but the liver will kill you. And once again be sure it`s calibrated to you races chemical make up. Oh! and make sure that the animal is Dead before you test it.

Zanrain and Sons, LIC. Outfitters to the Stars, and Beyond!
Excellent post. You may want to contact TJ about franchising your outfitters to run next door to his CJ stands, get you get up and go, and then GO!

I'd like to know what an exScout would use. This is a general purpose kit, for habitable planets (i.e. a breathable atmosphere, and climate from [oh] the edges of the Sahara to southern Alaska). Why not use the SAS three-tier backpack thing as a base?

Edit: Plus, what is a "general" survival kit? (No, I don't mean the kind that the rest stand up, salute and yell "Sir, yes SIR!" at...)

Here's a minimun kit I used for a scout character, based on what I personally carry in the field. It all fits into a knife and sheath combination.

Survival knife (Randall Mod 18) with saw teeth and hollow handle
Inside the handle are:
Compass
5 doses painkill
5 doses broadband antibiotic
5 fishhooks
3 straight sewing needles
2 curved sewing needles
10 lifeboat matches
wire saw

Wrapped around the handle
Monofillament
synthetic spidersilk thread
Snare wire
Parachute cord

In sheath pockets
sharpening stone
magnesium fire starter
SipMaster filter straw
ReGen I autoinjector

That's my minimum. Add to that:

Travel bag/Rucksack
Byrd survival staff. Can be threaded into the knife to make a spear.
Inside the staff:
Spearfishing tip
10 blowgun darts
Pen flare launcher and 5 flares
Space blanket
2 autoinjectors ReGen I
Memory plastic universal splint
Bullion cubes
50 lifeboat matches
parachute cord
paper
space pen
small flashlight
surgical tubing
small bottle Tobasco
compass

Survival rifle/shotgun (folding)
Stock contains 20 rifle and 5 shotgun rounds
Clothing (Layered including ECWS)
Gloves
Active sunglasses
Sun block
Machete
metal mirror
toiletries
axe/prybar
Leatherman tool
10 emergency rations
10 silver coins
5 gold coins
Small medkit
Small broadband radio
Amuse-a-native kit (Beads, colored feathers, a few small knives and other bright and shinies)

If anyone knows of any canon servival kits (other than the 2 I have in my equipment list) I would realy like a list of them so I can add them to the list.
