Symbols for deck plans

I have some concepts that I'd like to draft and possibly publish. I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a set of symbols used for drafting deckplans? Things like the iris door symbol, or the hatch, control chairs and the like. I spent a couple of hours scouring the net, but was only able to find some custom stuff for Campaign Cartographer and another fan/user made program. I'm really looking for something to use in my Autodesk CAD software.

Thanks much in advance

A quick Google search got me these from Freelance Traveller and this very site, so they should help you get started.

When I started drafting my deck plans in Adobe Illustrator, I thought I should be able to find some already done, but after many hours looking, I just built my own set. I'll export the symbols I have to the file area. Hopefully it will get you over the initial hump. My symbols aren't completely Trav standard, but... well, there you go.

I have my symbols that you can use. I am on leave at the moment but when I get back to work, I can write you out a DWG file that contains all the symbols I have created so far.

You may need to scale the symbols down or up to suit your CAD settings, but they are there if you want them.

Would that help, assuming you are using AutoCAD?

That would help immensly.

Very cool.

Unfortuately AutoCAD is a vector graphics program not a raster based one, so exporting to any image format is not an easy task to undertake as BMP is the only option. I can export to PDF, then convert that PDF to PNG, but the results would not be that great. Happy to try though.

MS Paint seamlessly saves BMP images as PNG images*, so if you can send BMP images we should be able to convert them easily.

* It doesn't like to save "as GIF" if the BMP image is in a color format (it alters the colors), and saving "as JPG" of course magically creates extra colored pixels in places the BMP had nothing (image static).

I am more worried about image degradation from conversion. But I will give the conversion a trial.

You can webprint to PNG direct using AutoCAD's print function so that will be the way I will proceed.

Can AutoCAD do svg? It's not as universally accessible as raster formats, but Inkscape is FOSS, and it's easy enough to do a conversion there. Best of all, it won't lock the resolution.

Dang but that gave me fits. Did something up, working all the little dots, saved it as a JPG, came back to it, and SURPRISE! Learned my lesson.

No, no SVG export ability.

I tried the export to print to web option (PNG) and it is not a good resolution. I will play a bit more with that as there are a few options for output to try.

Regardless, I will endevour to make the DWG file of the symbols available in the files area as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, that set doesn't work for me. I want to be able to print the result on an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet, and Paint has a lower limit on how small things can get. On the scale I do things, when I copy and paste the image, the Imperium chair for example ends up being 3 meters by 3 meters. There's ways to shrink them, but by the time I clean it up I'd have done as well to build my own image from scratch. My own chair is no more than 14 ... pixels? ... wide in Paint.

I use a 15 by 15 pixel grid when I'm designing drawings as well. (not a promotion) the program I use allows me to shrink drawing to any size I want as long as I save them to a specific file format. Then I can pull them up and adjust the size to what ever I want. An example of this are my Gazelle drawing. They all started out as those little depictions I make of the ship. I just blew them up and cleaned them up. With line art like those used in deckplans, there shouldn't be any clean up since there are no conflicting colors.

Below is a sample of one of my deckplans. I create symbols and move/copy/rotate as needed for the internal arrangement of the design I am working on.

It is a straightforward process to export those symbols as external drawings that can be installed into another drawing as required.

I work on a 1.5m x 1.5m drawn grid to construct the design. A copy is made of the finished design and everything is tidied up on the copy. All linewidths and elements of the drawing have their own layers and this enable great flexibility when editing.

Does everyone realize there is a set of deck plan parts in the art gallery?

Yes, and thank you for posting such, I've made use of those recently.

My need is for non-standard symbols to represent furnishings on a starship, in particular items found in a High Passage suite or on a yacht. I have done alterations, making a single bed-berth into a double-king sized bed, making sofas from chairs, etc but it is a bit time-consuming.

What would be helpful might be simple but currently unavailable things such as luxury bath fixtures (spas, tubs, shower-sauna combos), gaming tables similar as found in casinos and of all things, plants.

Silly yes but sorting out a high-end accommodation on a chartered ship that has a small but nicely assembled conservatory in place of a lounge. A touch of elegance on an otherwise drab but functional vessel.

Before I forget, a set of figure 'symbols' (silhouettes) based on the style used in the deck plans that appear in the Classic Traveller LLBs would be most welcome. Admittedly those are a bit dated and possibly politically-incorrect but they are fun and are a part of the history of the game. :D
