T20 Fanzines?

Flynn

In the past, Traveller used to be supported by a number of fanzines, such as the Security Leak magazine that may someday make a return via the web at http://www.securityleak.com/ - provided that the owner/editor finds the time and interest to pursue it.

One would imagine that the OGL would give Traveller fans even more incentive to produce a T20-supporting fanzine, yet I really haven't heard anyone make comment about such. I realize that the effort would most likely have to be released without charge, and this fact in and of itself might be the reason why no one's really pursued such a venture. If I had a choice between creating for the fun of it, and creating for the fun of it and selling my results to COTI, I can see the appeal of making a little cash off of your contribution.

Then again, a T20 fanzine may be discouraged by either Marc Miller or QLI, in which case I perfectly understand that as a reason why there's no fanzine out there.

Yet when I look on the web, and listen to the old grognards and collectors (of which I consider myself but an amateur next to the more tenured and accomplished), I hear of these old "fly-by-night" fanzines for CT and MT that made their contributions and moved on. It's hard to imagine that today, with the internet and PDF formating being so easily available, we don't see efforts along those lines using the internet as their distribution method.

Of course, for all I know, there's someone out there right now, slaving away at the first issue of their T20 fanzine, or putting together a T20 netbook, or something else akin to the fanzine phenomenon of old based on a love for the game that is Traveller.

If so, then I'd love to hear about your work.

Happy Travellin',
Flynn

I'm fairly certain someone on CotI solicited for a T20 fanzine around last summer. I don't think anything came of it. There is room for one though between JTAS, CotI, and the big Traveller sites it would IMO need to have a distinct focus (which is not the same thing as one type of articles or one theme) and an enthusiastic editor.

If a Traveller / T20 'zine isn't doable (though I would aim for this first) perhaps contribute to existing d20 'zines? It might increase Traveller awareness while also contributing to the d20 community in general. Granted Traveller specific content might not be as useful for general d20 fans and Traveller fans may not want to bother getting a d20 zine just for a Traveller article. :(

Being a Robert E. Howard, HP Lovecraft, and Tekumel* fan, I enjoy a good fanzine and agree with you on free versions on the net and/or pdf files.

* which has an older zine converted to the web and an online APA.

[EDIT]Found the thread for a T20 e-zine. Looks like nothing came of it.[/EDIT]

I personally do contribute to Freelance Traveller, and have had several T20 articles published through them. I'm doing what I can to increase awareness.

It's more of a curiosity than anything, and I think you've hit on the biggest reason why there's not one, actually, what with COTI and JTAS having such a heavy presence and all.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing a fanzine put out by the fans, even if it wasn't T20.
But a little T20 would be very cool, indeed.

Thanks,
Flynn

It did occur to me at one point to have a go at setting one up, on a similar pattern to OD&DITIES, the fanzine I run for OD&D (though I am as big a Traveller fan as I am an OD&D fan) - what would the position be as regards copyright on a free PDF webzine, released every few months? And would this be what people want? And would there be submissions? (I'd be shooting for a CT / T20 mix).

Personally, I'd love to see a fanzine produced once a quarter or more often, containing quality Traveller submissions of primarily T20 or CT/MT materials.

BTW, it is a privilege to make the acquaintance of the driving force behind OD&DITIES. I like your work, good sir.

Hmmm.... I'm torn. I missed the 'T20 ezine' myself beforehand. However, I suppose there is no harm doing the preliminaries for a zine. Here is what I had in mind...

The netzine would be entitled, at least provisionally, 'Spinward Ho!'. I'd aim for 24 - 32 pages per issue, released 3 - 4 times a year depending on submissions. (You get them in, I'll put the issues out!)

I'd make the magazine a broad church, much like OD&DITIES - anything from rules ideas, scenarios, starships, vehicles, weaponry, NPCs, referee tips, short stories, or even mini-campaign settings. The magazine would cover CT & T20 - submissions for either (or dual-statted) would be welcome. I've got a couple of articles already - so what do people think? I'm posting a poll up in the Scout Surveys section for people to make their preferences known - so please post there.

Another point - if I'm stepping on anyone's toes here, then please let me know ASAP.

So...any thoughts?

Richard

P.S. - Always great to find an OD&DITIES fan, Flynn! Issue 12 went live on Wednesday if you haven't checked it out yet.

Okay, Richard, that sounds like a good plan. You could post the issues in the eLibrary as well as on your site, if you wish.

I've got a few articles I can contribute. What format would you like them in?

Looking forward to it,
Flynn

RTF or Word format would be best, but I can probably convert most anything you send in. I've got a couple of pieces myself already - I'm really beginning to get excited about this. Could you send any submissions to: Methuslah@tongue.fsnet.co.uk

Thanks!
Richard

Hmm... I'm trying to email for permission from Quiklink but am not getting through (probably because I'm having to use a Yahoo! address at the moment). Who should I PM?
