T20 Release Schedule!!

What is James Maliszewski up to these days, I wonder... His webpage and column in RPG.net has not been updated in a donkey's age...

His Fading Suns adventure is very cool, strongly recommend this one for those doing Grey Feudal Traveller.

(I don't know Hunter what is so Dark about Fading Suns. The whole milieu seems optimistic to me when you count in players are doing their part in the passion play).

I dunno, could be the Inquisition, the dying (fading suns), the fact that anyone not a noble or in the church is pretty much a non-entity, the stagnation of society and development, that type of stuff.

Don't get me wrong, the setting is well done, its just not my style of game.

Wow! That is quite the team of writers that you have on staff! Loren must be fuming...<smile> I am just wondering what else James is up to? As his webpage used to have an update on all his current projects, including those things to be released in the Far Future. (sorry I couldn't resist the pun) What other plans do you have for James, Hunter.

On your other point, true, the Inquisition puts a damper mood and Nobles are quite extreme in Fadins Suns. But, I have found that the treatment of the nobility was one of the major gaps in Traveller. It suggested all sorts of things but without any real background, you couldn't the feeling what the Imperium was all about. Which was great because, of course, it allowed the Imperium to be light, dark or grey. But, it just was lacking...

As for the Inquisition, it follows naturally when you have a Universal Church and the suppression of the Scientific Method. I could see this phenomena happening on one world in the Traveller universe but as a general phenomena. Perhaps, in a Long Night, Hard Times, or TNE milieu.

BTW, I don't take your words as criticism, it is just interesting to see what motivates game designers. For me, I have always been drawn to the darker edges of Science Fiction. (nothwithstanding, my appreciation of Asimov)

I have to say I am now very disappointed with the release schedule. I have old Traveller material but my players have not wanted to play because they don't want to learn another system. (Which the old system is quite frankly not very good by modern standards) But since we have waited a year, now my players have lost interest.

They are anxious to move on with some other genre. Its a shame, I like the background, but we have no confidence that it will be out even this year!

Surprise! T20 is a joke! There is no T20! We have just been stringing everyone along for the past 11 months!

Hunter

PS: Read the date on this post if you have any belief this post is for real....

Not to sound negative - but the T20 book seems to have missed its publish date... I posted in another thread asking for some clarification. It states on the release schedule that it will be out March 2002.

It is now April...

I will be posting a notice on the website about the situation soon. But basically we are trying to clear it out of playtest now and push it into layout. I'd rather not post another date until we are sure when it will release.

See what happen when you camp on the doorstep of your FLGS. Major disappointment and humiliation.

Gawd, I hate game groupies.

Personally, I try not to get too attached to the release date. If the product comes out, then the product comes out. I am more concerned with the quality of the product than with the publisher trying to meet the deadline, which more often than not resulted in a "rushed job" material (full of errors).

At the risk of being flamed... anyone who is so attached to the release date then whines about the game product being late really needs to re-prioritize his life.

** patiently waits for T20 ... but not camping outside of his FLGS like a game groupie **

Ahhhh. Promised shipping dates, and Traveller Products. Makes me nostalgic for the days when one of the earlier JTAS' missed its ship date by NINE MONTHS.

FFE005, FFE006, FFE007, and T^20 are carrying on a grand tradition.

Expecting T^20:

Not for Halloween 2001
Not for Christmas 2001
Not for New Years 2002
Not for Valentines Day 2002
Not For Ides Of March
Not for Easter 2002
Not For April Fool's 2002
Probably Not for Memorial Day 2002
Probably Not for Fourth Of July 2002
Probably Not for GenCon 2002
More Likely Halloween 2002.

DOH!
Sorry dafrca!
This was originally a post on publishing by dafrca. He had some points I had meant to reply to and somehow managed to edit the message instead! I didn't realize it until I had submitted it and looked at the updated page. Unfortunately only the part I quoted remains...

Game companies should also care when they are late. Even if the deadline is self imposed, it should matter. They have salaries, rent, insurance, and artwork to pay for. Costs build as time is passing.

I have two responses (well three really):

Imperium Games. Aw hell lets not even go there.

d20 Star Wars...hmmm I seem to remember that The Star Wars Errata Core Book is to be released here soon. You know the one they are having to print less than a year after it was released because they rushed it to print without proper playtesting.

Deadlines are all well and good, but in the end quality is what matters. I think the playtesters will back me up when I say the extra time we have spent on T20 has been worth it. The system we will be releasing has been hashed out, playtested, debated, and generally refined over the past 11 months. I won't begin to try and say that it will be 100% error free, but the system works, it keeps the Traveller 'feel', and is something I think all of us will be fairly proud to say they had a hand in its creation.

If given a choice and only one, which would you rather choose?

1. meet the deadline, despite product's poor quality (eh, we can always post a 10-page errata later on).

OR

2. ensure product's high quality, despite missing the deadline.

I don't know that I would call myself a game groupie, although I do enjoy role-playing games and have for sometime. I just wanted to express my concerns and I felt this forum was good place to do that.

I am actually really curious if anyone can say it will be out this Summer for sure. The fortunate thing for Traveller is that I have not seen another strictly Science Fiction game with its history, so as a consumer, I can't really take my business elsewhere.

There are plenty science-fantasy games but few strictly sci-fi (no magic) still alive and kicking. If anyone knows of a good one please let me know. We used to play Star Frontiers a long, long time ago and it was okay. I believe Alternity is dead as well.

That should be "Originally posted by dafrca" inside the quote.

Amen to that! Of course, I am not speaking as one of the T20 playtesters, but as one of many customers with a limited budget.

Well of course I would rather have the quality of a thoroughly tested product. That is not what I am saying in my post - nor do I ever think I stated I wanted them to rush.

I was simply asking for an update on the release schedule. Since on the official T20 site it STILL lists it as coming out in March...

I still think it is a fair question. *shrug*

You mean the one that they are producing that is coming out a year and a half later?
