T20's Danger

Unlike some others, I think that T20 is a good idea. Bringing in scifi lovers from the D&D crowd will certainly increase Traveller's fan base and popularity.

The one danger I can see is that it might burn out in a few years rather than trudging along for another few decades or more.

Any comments?

It's a risk - but what isn't? For me this, T5, and other systems yet to come are steps in the right direction to ensure the longevity of the game. A sound rule system that is contemporary is only ever going to be an asset - naysayers and purists who feel the only system is their prefered system notwithstanding. New gamers are attracted using a system they are familiar and comfortable with - and with people at the helm of new games that have the passion of Marc in the case of T5 and Hunter in T20's case - not to mention the scores of playtesters and affionados from ALL Traveller's incarnations, it can only bode well for the future of the game.

Definitely agree with you, David. Purists could be said to be "Traveller Puritans", wanting everyone to agree with them.

I wanted the Classic Traveller Reprints before I got T4 not because I believed it to be a better game based on what I'd heard, but because I'd seen ads in old issues of DRAGON and when I heard it was still alive (I'd assumed RPing was dead until a little bit before then since you never saw them in stores where I live [still don't; gotta go out of town to get them other than ordering them]), I wanted it.

But of all the RPGs I've read, I like parts of almost all of them and find them interesting. There's no "perfect" RPG, nor is there just one that works well. But to try them all in play is a ridiculous attempt that'll burn you out before you decide on one you really like.

I liked learning the new rules of T4 and more recently T5. Sometimes change can be good.

(P.S.: I've set Tues. as the date for my first attempt at playing Traveller; cross your fingers, folks!)

Hi there! I'm a newbie to the Traveller Forum, but I've been playing since the first release of Snapshot way back when.

D20 is a definate step in the right direction, although I'll always have a warm spot in my heart for classic Traveller.

My one gripe with Traveller was the speed at which my play group ate up the adventures, and how I, and others, had to invent new adventures, borrow from other systems, or simply buy moduals for other games and port them to Traveller.

I hope the D20 move will spark a grand new Traveller era, and that we'll see lots of adventures (new ones) printed for what is my all time favorite RPG.

Have a look at my suggestion for adventures in the Traveller^5 forum. I think that would be good move for Traveller, especially if released quarterly.

However, the d20 Crowd may be different on this matter. Any d20-fans but non-Traveller players here? If so, would you prefer the 1/2/2 for $15 spread I reccomended for T5 or the $9.95 full adventure format that WotC is using?

Anyone else want to comment?

I'd actually like to see a mix of both sorts of module, as well as one or two books like The Traveller Adventure.

Traveller and d20...
I didn't like very much the idea of GURPS Traveller either (never found GURPS interesting)
I 've a bad feeling about this. It's not that I dislike the system in itself but
a) I don't think it might fit an SF game (I haven't seen Star Wars yet...), certainly Buck Rogers didn't...
b) I'm afraid the d20 monster may "eat" Traveller's audience instead of bringing new people to the game.
There's a lot of talk going on about d20 having revitalized the RPG industry, IMHO it looks like it revitalized only WOTC...

I'm really looking forward to T20. I love CT but at the same time I think a d20 version of TRAVELLER will have a lot to offer. Besides, any new TRAVELLER material is good material in my opinion.
As for T20 burning out in a few years, that's always a possibility, no matter what game you're talking about. A lot of great games have come and gone but that doesn't make them any less fun or viable. After all, CT was out of print for many years, and look how popular it remains.

IMHO perhaps the best way to take T20 is with a "wait and see" attitude. The rule setting isn't my favorite, I have to admit, but perhaps we can see if Traveller can be made to fit within a D20 games engine. For me, worst case is that we get more background material usuable for whatever version(s) of Traveller everyone is playing, be it CT, MT, GURPS, etc., best case is obvious, new life and new Traveller players come to the game, to play it in this incarnation and perhaps even the others.

As an aside, I do hope that the Year 1000 time period isn't the only one covered, and that Gateway Domain isn't the only one used for T20. As much as CT didn't cover just the Spinward Marches, T20 shouldn't just be Year 1000 in Gateway.

(But at the same time, the basic T20 set should cover one specific time period/sector or domain)

Anyway, I could be wrong on this, remember I'm just a crazed despotic emperor.
