Tackling a Five-Seven like weapon system

Sir Brad

SOC-13
OK trying to put together a P-90 weapon for Classic would you use the SMG stats or an Auto Carbine? or something else? and what about the PS-90?

I'd probably rate the P-90 as an SMG, keep the weight the same (more ammo, less gun), and maybe up the armor vs a nudge (not for Nothing or Jack though), and increase the cost and TL of course.

For the PS-90 I'd go with the Carbine as the starting point and make the same changes as above.

Off the top of my head.

I had a quick look but I'm in a rush and couldn't find my link to the Traveller Gun page by... ? Uncle Bob? Maybe it's been lost to the ether. It was very cool, many more modern guns done to CT (iirc) stats. I vaguely recall the P-90 being there. Or somebody else did it. Well, I'll have a look again later when I have some time and see if I can turn it up. Quick last thought, it might have gotten bookmarked in the Imperial Starport section (COTI Features) of this site if you want to have a look around there.

Went looking for "Uncle Bob's" myself, couldn't find it. got a player who wants to go with a PDW for her character since it's got the handiness of a SMG but with Range almost that of a Assault Carbine and counter armour capabilities of an Assault Carbine, also Ammo compatible with Pistols.

the player is Bonking a Police Tactical Officer, and FN is trying to sell our State Police Service on Five-Seven, but their happy with 9mm Glocks for line officers and 10mm Glocks for Tactical with MP-5's, AR-15' & F88's for SMG & longarm work. but saw some interesting Literature on something that's in testing, their looking again at the fully Auto version of the PS-90 (I think it was called the PA-90) and being able to swap out the PA-90 Barrel for a normal P-90 barrel on a field strip.

I'd go the direction of considering it an SMG (unless you want to go the route of PDW - which is really the class the P90 is in now - a currently sexy subject) and give it a better chance at penetrating armor, but do less damage.

AP rounds generally don't do as much damage as softer ones, but this thing fires enough rounds in a burst fast enough and accurately enough that the point is really moot. So, you can figure it can do a 1, 4, or 10 round burst with 1, 2, 3 chances to hit in addition to the regular group target rule. I'd say 3D6 is good for damage, but the range ought to be short...I know you could slap a carbine length barrel on one - just have a range bonus if a player wants to add something like that to his personal weapon.

It handles well in CQB, the whole point of a PDW really, so it should be more accurate at Close and Short range than an SMG, but about the same at Medium. Long+ needs the carbine barrel mod.

The biggest advantage of a gun like this (Traveller wise) will be the monster ammo capacity, the close quarters accuracy, and the high ROF for increased chances to hit multiple targets. It'll be great in a ship, but not the king of the battlefield.

BTW: my agency recently looked at a couple of them and as a firearms instructor I played with them. I'm not bonking a cop but I play one in real life;) These P90's are great and cool, but except for the tactical guys and what they do I'd rather have the standoff capability of my patrol carbine. Currently that is my AR, but it used to be an HK MP-5 in .40SW.

Hurrah for the little grey cells!

They finally managed to piece together enough memories to track down the site I was looking for.

Through travellercentral.com you can find Tod Glenn's weapon pages here:

Tod hasn't been on CotI since May, and I don't know when the site above was last updated, but at least it's still there. I'll have to leave the search for the P-90 there to you Sir Brad, gotta get busy elsewhere. Enjoy :)

You can consider it more "accurate" at Close and Short ranges if you are using the CT combat system as opposed to Striker or AHL. Since accuracy in CT is bundled with handling then a PDW like a P90 would be a lot handier than an MP5 or an UZI, but not as accurate at longer ranges. This handling quality involves not just weight and shape, but rate of fire vs. control of the weapon (muzzle climb, etc.). UZI's have problems with that, and Mp5's are heavy and more of a carbine design so they are longer than a PDW. But that's why PDWs are all the rage among manufacturers now - including H&K (the new HK MP7 is really zoomy).

I found the P90 to be a lot easier to use in room clearing and hallways because of it's design (tight into the body, not much sticking out beyond your forward hand = easier to slice around corners and in small areas), but my MP (loved it though I did) was heavier and less "handy" in comparison. On the other hand my MP shot like a laser at ranges beyond 50 meters and the P90 was a pain to even try that. Again, just my opinion based on how the design of the weapon fits into your body.

In CT this translates into the Range DM tables (accuracy+handling) and the penetrative qualities of the ammo go into the Armor table (bump it up a point or two vs. similar sized ammo, but not more damage than a 9mm round since it doesn't expand so much unless it hits something hard - then it might fragment and spin off all over).

For a Striker/AHL system you could cut down the effective range and give it a higher penetration value. I find the Striker system to be more realistic and use it myself for that reason, but it is less forgiving to player characters as a result.
