I am a long time fan of CoC and a new(ish) fan of Traveller. I think the mix has great potential. There is a link up-thread for Cthulhu Rising; follow it and check out some really great stuff. There are a bunch of adventures posted and other support material. It's interesting that Chaosium's lack of support for Cthulhu Rising and Traveller's popularity as a Sci-Fi rule set could combine to allow Cthonian Stars to steal the limelight for this genre mash when CR preceded it by quite a bit and the author put so much work into it.
The anti-cthulhu posts seem to indicate the general misconception about CoC gaming in general; its all death and insanity - why would I want to play that?
Mythos fiction goes far beyond what Lovecraft wrote. My favorite Mythos authors are Howard and Tierney. Their heros beat back the threat and continue the fight. CoC adventures themselves are much more pulpy and "pro-adventurer" than Lovecraft purists would perhaps prefer because that makes for a better RPG.
I'm a little disappointed with the "Sol only" scope of the game, but I'm definitely getting this book.
There has also been teases about modifications to the combat rules that I'm keen to see, as I'm not really happy with the core MGT combat rules (damn dynamic initiative).
