Something about flying to the moon and back and having your own private stateroom on a lower deck has a certain appeal.

Very true. Pretty stable though with the 1/3 to 2/3rds diameter to length. I know people criticized Orion for looking like the Apollo capsule, and the designers said that the basic shapes are form follows function. I'd like to think on this Lovell the bridge could eject as well.
