The Virus & Alien computers

SOC-12
I do not have access to my copy of TNE. I was wondering, was the virus able to affect any of the other alien cultures computers? I could see how it could affect the Imperium's systems since every thing seemed to be standardized.

I cannot see it affecting the Vargar systems, as they seemed not to have standardized any thing. The Hivers, Aslan, Zho and even the Sol may have different OS altogether.

Just wondering.

Yes, it took them all out.

Presumably there was a transition time while Virus figured out the new hardware/software, but it would infect it all readily. Everyone was affected: Imperial, Solomani, Alsan, Hiver, K'kree, and Vargr.

There were only two groups to survive Virus in any semblance of their pre-Virus state: the Hivers and the various Spinward States. The Hivers were able to figure Virus out, and figure out how to defeat it, quickly enough to save a large portion of their pre-Virus empire. With the warning given the Regency, and the protection of the Rift, the Regency was able to organize the various states (Regency, Zhodani, transRift Aslan, and various small states) to form a defensive perimeter.

Other than those two groups, just about everything was crushed.

Yes, it can/ did. [all of the above systems].

Why? Adaptibility and it was constantly mutating. Even the Droyne's computers were not immune..
TNE-adventure book Smash N Grab: "Operation Cosmic Fire"...gives us an example when Virus got inside, and identified with the racial architecture, and thought itself a Droyne as well..but thats one variant of such an adaptation.

The Vargr, the K'kree, the Hivers, and the Aslan systems were eventually invaded, and overcome and had to be fought off.

The Vargr, being used to constant changes in leadership probably came to grips with Virus better than other of the major races--they might not have liked having a silicon boss suddenly on the scene..many probably even collaborated..that Oekhsos cyber ware being all over the Extants does lead me to wonder what exactly happened..

The Solomani used different computer architecture, but they had other problems as well
..more to be revealed when 1248 TNE comes out Jackleg!

Well, because of the way it worked (actually rewriting circuits, etc.) it wouldn't be stopped by mere non-uniformity.

It's been ages since I read Smash'n Grab, but 'Cosmic Fire' left me with a sneaking suspicion that Virus may well have had an Ancient component. That always set better with me, even when I wasn't crazy about that idea to begin with.

Lately I've begun to reevaluate a lot of TNE, and I'm having much fewer problems with Virus than I once did. I now see it akin to one of the Powers in Vinge's A Fire on the Deep.

(I try to ignore the TK abilities the Cymbelline chips had, though...)

First: Glad to hear it! Take a look around- I think TNE has a lot more to offer than many people realize.

Second: I like the idea of humanity getting whalloped by an accidentally created Transcend. After all, who knows what such a Power might look like to a sector of space that had never seen one before?

Now, assuming that was true- what is the Empress Wave?

To expand on Sigg's post,

- Sign up with Moot, read the 1248 playtest and find out what it will be.

- Go the the Ask Dave Nilsen thread and find out what it would have been. (Granted it is a 33 page thread.)
