Top-Down Vehicle Graphics

It's taken me ages to get round to this, but here's a top-down of my LSP Air Raft. As it is, it should print out at about 7.5 cm in length. Approximately 28mm scale - or close to - at 300dpi.

I'll probably add it to the gallery too but I think the gallery re-sizes pics so don't expect it to still be to scale.

Enjoy,

Crow

I use campaign cartographer for deckplans and some scaled down symbols. Its not free. It has a lot of utility for planets, plans, buildings, vehicles etc.. I too however would love some sci-fi vehicles (grav etc...) top downs to use as icons for openrpg etc. Shrinking drawings is slow work. I will however try that previously mentioned draw program. Thanks for the info.

If I ever find a free/cheap drawing program that will do this, and is simple enough that I can learn it faster than I forget it, I'll make a library of these things. I'd find them very useful myself.

Don't hold your breath though, I've been looking for 5 years so far.

All the software I've found is either so basic that it won't join curves to lines (eg Word Draw) or is so complex I can't devote the time to learn its use (eg XxxxCAD).

Added: Then there's always the problem of compatibility. Could anyone else read a library created on some obscure software? and if I jpeg it, you get pixellation on scaling. :(

Try taking a look at Macromedia's Fireworks software (now owned by Adobe). It is not really that hard to learn, but it does require sometime and since you have already spent 5 years... :) Fireworks also saves images as a PNG file by default (this is what the web is moving to and it allows for transparent views).

I hope that helps. :D

Isoc, check out Serif Drawplus (vector drawing proggie). The earlier versions are free and the the prices then scale up to about $100 for the latest version. Even the earliest version should produce this sort of drawing and it's a snap (very intuitive) to use. Because there are no complicated fills or transparency, you could save the image as a WMF which is sort of vector based and scales nicely.

Or you can use something like the pro-fantasy stuff: Campaign Cartographer (or Cosmographer) and save the file in a vector (dxg. format) CC is basically a CAD programme anyway. Sturm, CC comes with lots of pregenerated symbols and you could very easily make your miniatures from them.

Ravells do you own the Campaign Cartographer? If so what do you think about it? I have been considering buying it and the Cosmographer, but the graphics look very old and cheap.

I have both CC and the free Autorealm. I have switched to using the free Auotrealm to make deckplans and some top-down vehicle graphics. CC is more powerful, but there doesn't seem much I miss....I can still do everything I need to do with Autorealm, and it is MUCH easier to learn.

I've always found myself having to relearn CC if I hadn't used it for close to a year. Autorealm was simpler and much more intuitive.

Thanks for the drawing tips, guys, some of the stuff I tried, and transparency is one of the features I wanted but could never figure how to use.

However, just last week I found a couple of applications that have solved most of the problems for me. One is called Greenfish Icon Editor, and the other is a derivative of Open Office Draw that I discovered in a Linux bundle. Both are free. I'm still checking them out, but they look promising.

I never got my head around CC, and after spending my money on it I discovered Autorealm for free that seems to do just as well - unless you're into really complex stuff - and you might as well practice with the freebie. If you don't like Autorealm, you won't like Cartographer.

Scarecrow, there are a bunch of guys over at Dungeonforge who would love to use your air raft as a 40x80 pixel tile, but AFAIK their image library of top down vehicles is a free for all. How would you feel about them using it?

They're welcome to it. If it's possible I'd like a credit but if they can't (ie - there's no need to write on the image) that's no biggie.

neat stuff there

I checked out dundjinni and found some useful stuff and will save me time. Thanks for the info. Did they use that program for the outer hulls? Or are they just adding map elements to something already existed. I would be interested in how to make the outside edges. The problem with campaign cartographer is its is just lines. If it is some complex drawing thing probably not a good thing for me.

Thanks, mondo

Note: the Dundjinni graphics can be used in CC3 and visa versa. Also CC3 is some what easier to use that CC2 was. So if you want Dundjinni type mapping but with out some of the restrictions you can use CC3.

Cheers, I'm about to drop a folder of stuff over there, so I'll pass it on. I'll put an 'Air raft ReadMe' in the folder as a credit, that's probably easiest.

'kindly donated by... for personal use only, please do not separate the image from this ReadMe'

sort of thing?

I have a couple of top-downs I did myself, but they're only a couple of centimetres long - the scale of LBB deckplans, not tabletop scale, and they'll pixellate to hell if you try to enlarge them. More useful to mappers than gamers.

I agree with CC, I use it for a lot, both for new deckplans & redoing old line-drawing deckplans. I've only used for just a few vehicles.

There is also an add-on for CC2 for doing counters/paper miniatures/portraits. I don't have it, but friends of mine do. Pretty slick.

I made a top-down graphic of a Trepida/Intrepid tank using AutoRealm. Autorealm is much simpler to use, and I'm completely without artistic ability, and was still able to put this togather in about 1.5 hours.

You can also look at the dundjinni forums (at dundjinni.com) in the user creations areas - there's quite a few vehicles done up as objects there. They're in a raster format (.png) and meant for use with the Dundjinni software but since .png can be used with just about any image editing software you don't really need the dundjinni application.
