Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.
As depressing as the last season was, it also had one of the more amusing prison break scenes ever. But, given the 'cracks in time' from Matt Smith's first Dr Who season has erased events like the Stolen Earth events, did season 3 (or even the end of season 2) now still happen? The whole Torchwood crew could still be alive and the Cardiff hub still intact!
However, the thing that worries me is Torchwood in America just doesn't seem right: I would have thought a series based on UNIT would have been better.
ObTrav: The Dr Who episodes Impossible Planet/Satan's Pit had the "Torchwood Archive" funding a deep space expedition. So the Torchwood Archive could feature within the TU.
Agreed, UNIT from the Pertwee days would be better but the tag line told you everything. International, yet british. Procedural without mucking around with proceedures such as warrants and the like. United Nations but effective (remember how the Brig was always on the phone with the Minister/Geneva).
But, look how they basically also transformed UNIT in the nuWho to be a be a Department of Homeworld Security rather than the elite of the world's armed forces or even something akin The Avengers**. Maybe, the C7 supplement might remedy this... But, I think that era collapsed in about 1991 with first Gulf War. It was funny to see how XMFC channeled some that vibe before descending to an American film.
That still leaves lots of room for my Traveller milieux which is going to tackle these things.
**Reading the story of The Avengers, especially, how they escaped the UK during the Winter of Discontent is a fascinating tale. Not everything was a nice as Life on Mars protrays it to be in the 1970s...
Notice how sometimes in the nuWho they say Unified Intelligence Task Force? (Yet the official UNIT website says United Nations Intelligence Task Force.)
I'm interested in the Thunderbrat ... ahem, ThunderCATS, yeah, that's what I meant, rewrite.
(As a side note, I'm playing in a Gamma*World campaign at my nearest game shop; the guys came up with the name "Thunderbrats" for their gladiator group as a riff on the cartoon.)

o: Were we watching the same show? (Actually I've not seen the US version. Was that different?)
LoM: I have not and will not see the US version...some things are better kept British. Yes, there was a fair bit of nostalgia but as Tyler kept on fighting he found the 70s were not all that memory cracked up to be.
And, for sure I noticed how it said unified and that was part of the problem. It was an attempt to reboot that sadly should have just given the boot.
I am sorry but I don't buy it. It was just part of the reboot that was wrong. Just like Love & Monsters was wrong and bringing back the Master was wrong in the End of Time...I like nuWho and realize that it is many ways superior than old Who but keep what works.
Sometime when they reboot a show (Battlestar) they screw it up. Doctor Who has had it gaffs but stays true for the most part to the orginal. GI JOE Renagandes is actually pretty good, but that is because of the producer Kline. He also did Men in Black (Cartoon) version. He actually makes it more along the lines of Anime. They have real stories and an actual plot...

The 70s … might be fun to visit but you wouldn’t want to live there.

Actually, for the most part I don’t have a problem with the new UNIT (or the new Master). But I would like to have seen the Colonel Mace character featured in more episodes: I thought the dynamic between Tennant’s Doctor and Mace had potential.

I think we are saying the same thing but disagreeing on quibble...
No, I don't think Mace and Tennant would have got along. It would have taken a much stronger actor to put the Tennant Doctor in his place which is why his saga ends alone but still with friends. True, that part of the theme of Doctor Who is dealing with solitude but Tennant took it to a whole new height. Which is why I think, so many episodes deal with the Doctor's alleged death because we are so connected with the central character. It used to be that we related to the companions but what nuWho does is build empathy for the lead. Which is a rather clever marketing ploy, as their studies had shown the demographic for Who had changed from 15-21 yr boys to 12-21yr old girls. And, yes, they knew that had to include all the formula that worked in the past - but it is interesting to watch how the drama changes and consequentially it no longer being simply a science fiction drama but more of a melodrama with elements of being a soap.
