Trader Customs

One very practical custom I thought of is that Free Traders heading into Aslan territory always carry a female supercargo-say the captain's wife or sister. A male supercargo would always have to be fighting duels to gain respect from the Aslan, and too many duels are bad for business.

Jatay:

AM1 and S&A say you are dead wrong. The aslan will simply treat a male supercargo as a female. (Exception: tolerance 1+ will not, as they know better.)

They will not, as long as the super does not insist.
What if he comes from a culture that cares a lot about such? So perhaps I should amend that to mean "always a female, or from a culture that does not care". Because if the super is brought up to care almost as much as Aslan sparks will fly. What if the super is a Swordie.
Then he might insist on fighting a duel to prove himself and the Aslan would say fighting a crossover duel would be undignified, which would make him more angry. And on and on. Actually that makes for good comic relief.
Though as you say there could be a good tolerance role.

My interpretation: An Aslan will assume that a supercargo is female and will treat a male one as female unless he or she is made aware of the true gender. At that point he or she will treat the supercargo as male instead of as a supercargo, which is liable stuff up any trade negotiations. If the Aslan has tolerance, there is a possibility that he or she will treat a male supercargo as a supercargo even if aware of his gender.

In any case it would be lovely comic relief-any GM's want to try it someday?

If I remember low caste Aslan sometimes work out of tradition.
So what if they decide the super must be a chattel if he is not biologically female? Of course then they would still "deem" him a female.
Perhaps it would be better for the captain to take his wife along.

Try it? Hell, I've done it, both as player and GM... and have had Aslan PC's flat out refuse to acknowledge that Fred the Steward was a guy. Total denial. "Miss Fred, please stop nosing into my affairs, as my wife isn't here to kill you for it..."
