Traveller Pop Songs...

A few of you have mentioned "Alan Parsons Project", but without naming the song "The Traveller (Days are Numbers)".

The first time I heard this, I was on my way to a CT game. It was such an epiphanous moment, that I had to pull over just to listen. When I finally got to the game, the other players were trying to get through to WVIC radio in Lansing, Michigan just to find out if "Alan Parsons" was a pseudonym for "Marc Miller"; after all, we'd never seen the two of them photographed together... ;)

Rather than risk a copyright violation, here's the link:

Mike Oldfield - hard to go wrong with a lot of his stuff, including the album Songs of Distant Earth, based on Arthur C Clarke's novel. Good stuff. With over twenty albums, you're bound to find something inside his stuff that will spark some ideas for Traveller.

- Stephen Herron's first post in over a year.

Y'know what? I'd still vote for Yello (Deiter Meier and Boris Blank) for general electronic pop.

Stephen Herron? Back? Well, I suppose so...

Flykiller, you may actually force me to try to fill out more words for that sometime when I have a spare moment....

ARGH!

Another recommendation: Spaceman, from Bif Naked (I Bificus might be the album)

I also love the Dr. Who (Tom Baker era) theme music....

I know this is sort of repeating other stuff said elsewhere, but the Firefly tv show music was interesting - it seemed very off genre at first, but it sort of worked.

Anyone else have ideas like this?

How about the entire "Heavy Metal" soundtrack. I've worn out two cassette copies and one CD. Good stuff on there like "Cold Blue Light" (Stevie Nicks), BOC's "Vetran of the Psychic Wars"...

Rush has been mentioned. 'Cygnus X1' is a pretty cool tune (please forgive me, I can't recall what album that was on, and I'm to lazy to get my tape out to look at it).
It was on "Farewell to Kings". Did you know that the entire first side of their next album, "Hemispheres", was the sequel to that song?

Rush has dozens of SF-inspired songs:

2112 (whole album!)

Hemispheres
- La Villa Strangiato

Permanent Waves:
- Tide Pools (think of Blish's "Surface Tension" as you listen)
- Free Will (not SF, but rocks nonetheless)

Moving Pictures
- Red Barchetta
- Vital Signs
- YYZ
- Twilight Zone

Grace Under Pressure
- Distant Early Warning
- Red Sector A

... just to get you started.

While its not entirely sci-fi, Rush's 'Moving Pictures' album reminds me for some reason of the Solomani Rim War. Maybe my shrink can tell me why.
If you haven't yet, check out "Signals". The whole album has an incredibly "sci-fi" feel to it.

Peter Schilling has an album entitled The Different Story (A World of Lust and Crime) with several appropriate songs: "Major Tom (Coming Home)", "Noah Plan", "Zone 804", and (arguably) "Lone Survivor".

Thread resurrection complete!!!

Speaking of Rush, Kevin J Anderson's Resurrection, Inc. is based on/inspired by the entire Rush album Grace under Pressure (as stated by the author on the credits page).

How about Jimmy Buffet's Come to the Moon {1984}?

Full earth tonight
And Mars is big and bright
All our friends are flying in
It's such a lovely sight
Gravity never could hold me
That is what you always told me
You know me

Chorus:
So come to the moon
I hope to see you soon
Half a million miles isn't far to go
You know I need you so
I hope you still need me
So come to the Moon
The starship's leaving soon
Until then I'm wishing on every star
That you will be here soon
Come to the Moon

Those crazy martian days
When we went separate ways
Through time and space we'd find a place
To bring our lives in phase
We're lost amid the galaxies revolving
And we're all just a part of what's evolving
Evolving

Chorus:
So come to the Moon
I hope to see you soon
Half a million miles isn't far to go
You know I need you so
I hope you still need me
So come to the Moon
The starship's leaving soon
Until then I'm wishing on every star
Wondering where you are
Come to the Moon

Chorus:
So come to the Moon
I hope to see you soon
Half a million miles isn't far to go
You know I need you so
I hope you still need me
So come to the Moon
The starship's leaving soon
Until then I'm wishing on every star
That you will be here soon
Come to the Moon
Come to the Moon
Come to the Moon

My wife would paraphrase Gilbert & Sullivan. "I am a pirate Queen...". My creative juices have pretty well dried up on filking. I've started & never finished a bunch of Traveller filk. I only finished one & it was only two verses, & I lost the second verse.

The Corsair Girl(tune: Minstrel Boy) 1st verse

'The Corsair Girl to the stars has gone
where the cold of space will hide her.
Her father's gun strapped to her thigh,
And her mother's armor clad about her.

Although she fights for no state,
and all hands be against her.
One proud ship shall guard her life,
And one loyal crew will stand beside her.'
