Accused of spying, he was thrown into a lightless dungeon, tortured, and augmented when he finally broke and agreed (against his will) to be conscripted into the soldier caste of that world. The offered alternative was a slow, painful death and then being eaten by local, cannibal Vargr scientists. During his sightless recovery, the reporter was rescued and evacuated back to Serue.
