Why is there a dash in the UWP? I don't see why it isn't a string of 8 characters instead of 7-1. Is tech level somehow different from the other UWP characteristics?

I'm not sure. Given MWM's fixation on computer technology, you would expect an 8 digit number with no punctuation.

Maybe he just thought it looked better?

Yup, breaks up the space a bit.

Didn't it originally have two dashes, way back in ancient times? i.e.

A-788899-A

?

S3 has a space, not a dash.

oops, travellermap does have a dash

a uwp could get insane with out spaces though:

Tlaezhol 0105 X421000-0 Ba Po 023 Na M7IV M5V

vs

Tlaezhol 0105X4210000BaPo023NaM7IVM5V

my brain would melt

I thought that was one of my private personal delusions :)

Maybe it was put that way at one time somewhere that we both saw?

I think I usually put a space when in place of the first dash and would have even preferred a third dash between the world physicals and societal digits:

A-788-899-A

I usually do that mentally anyway :)

The variations I've seen in print:

Hxno A123456-7 SMC, A0, A3, A9, A11,
Hxno A123456 - 7 A5
Hxno A123456 7 S3, S10, A6, A7, A10, A12, A13, JG-LS, JG-MA, JG-CM, JG-GR
Hxno-A123456-7 A0, A1, A2, A3, A11,
Hxno-A123456 7 A4
A123456     Hxno JG-CR
A 123456     Hxno JG-LS
A 123456     Hxno JG-CM
A 123456 7    Hxno JG-MA JG-CM
Hxno A123 456 7 JG-MA JG-CM

Italics indicate may not be seen as part of UWP, bold indicates clearly part of UWP.
My preference is the double dash, and like Robject, I think the triple dash useful.

Got keep 'em separated.

I break mine up with spaces, except I keep the dash for love of the old school and I bracket the hex location.

[FS 1725] Permatic A 365 C8A-H Hi Ht Cx NWRCT, etc.

It is just a bit more readable to me. Of course TravellerMap Post function hates it so I have to take out the spaces and non reg bases.
