Vegans, O Vegans. Wherefore art thou, Vegans?

I distinctly recall that there was a magazine article detailing the Vegans, sometime in the CT/MT to T4 eras. But I've searched ny entire JTAS/Challenge collection and can't find it. Does anyone recall this article and can tell me where to find it? It definitely long predates GT:ISW. (Besides, I'm more interested in the Vegans' CT/MT/T4 style chargen stats.)

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, all!

I'd be interested in this as well. I've got all the stuff about Vegans in the various books but nothing (AFAIK) from any of the journals.

And I certainly haven't got any chargen tables for Vegans.

The longest article I can find on the Vegans (outside of their treatment in GT:ISW) is a writeup in the MT Imperial Encyclopedia. It's about half to two-thirds of a page in length, and goes into some physical, historical, and cultural detail, but doesn't provide any character generation information at all. It's really just an expansion of the original Vegan articles from the original Solomani Rim and Library Data supplements, though, so if you have them but not the MT:IE article, there's not that much that you're missing out on.

I never recall ever seeing an article on the Vegans in any issue of the old JTAS either, and this online article index seems to back me up on that.

It does seem odd that such an established and eminently playable race as the Vegans haven't gotten much more than a travelogue-brochure level of character treatment. My knowledge of Challenge magazine articles is pretty weak, however, so they could have gotten something added in there and I wouldn't know about it. It also occurs to me that there might be a slim chance of DGP slipping something past us on the Vegans in their old Solomani & Aslan book. Slim, but possible.

I don't have that book, however, and since it's nearly impossible to get at a price that would make anybody but a completist fanboy gag, I'm not likely to find out what's in it any time soon.

Hmm, curious, I too recall something of it as CT in the day (pre MT). Had a player as a Vegan once and I distinctly recall char gen. Unless we made it up? I'll have to drop him a note and see if his recall is any better.

The sources I used to put together my "everything you ever wanted to know about Vegans but were too scared to ask" document are:

  • CT Supp 10 Solomani Rim;
  • CT Supp 11 Library Data N-Z;
  • CT AM6 Solomani;
  • GURPS Traveller: Rim of Fire
I specifically didn't use MT:IE as a reference becasue the LD entry is exactly the same as the CT texts.

I remember that during the last days of HIWG, there was a group of us that ssat down and started to do a proper writeup of the Vegans. I remember correctly Bryan Borich was the one that coordinated the effort. However, I never saw the end of the work as private matters interfered.

Maybe there is something hidden on the net. I regretfully doesn't have those notes any more.

There might have been something in the TNE-era Traveller Chronicle magazine. Harold Hale's setting "Children of Earth" covered the Solomani Rim. If I recall correctly there was some detail on the Vegans there.

The magazine article in question was part of Harold Hale's Children of Earth chronicled in the fine TNE magazine: The Traveller Chronicle. While that magazine is sadly long gone...Harold Hale's work may exist still on the web...even if it means using the wayback machine.

I do have the original paper magazine if there is a highlight or something narrowly specific you want from it drop me a PM. But essentially the article just expands out what has already been written.

The Vegans article is in Traveller Chronicle no. 11; as kafka says, it's part of the Children of Earth 2 part article across issue nos. 10 and 11.

[EDIT:]I just realised: I have this somewhere in amongst my collection!...

Found it.

13 pages of Vegan history, from First Imperium up to and including TNE. No chargen though - sorry.

I'm still sure there was something else. Maybe it was on the HIWG CD

I was thinking maybe an issue of High Passage? I vaguely recall someone in our group having a couple of them.

But the more I think about it the more I think we made up what we needed from the basics in the Library Data and AM6.

Meh.

CT doesn't say anything about what Vegans eat.
GT says they're herbivorous.
Traveller Chronicle 11 says they're omnivorous.

As I said before, I have a "everything about Vegans in one place" document, composed of everything from CT, GT and (now) TNE. I just need to tweak it and add some stuff to it then do a proper reference list for it.

...and then post it in the Files section :) (or submit it to somebody for publication).

I'm 99.9% certain that there was no Vegan info in High Passage.
